I’ve been feeling my baby move all week, which I know is early especially for a first pregnancy (first one that has got this far anyway) but it’s definitely movement I’ve been feeling. Rolling/kicking feeling in my lower belly. It was particularly active yesterday morning, and went on for a couple of hours. However, since then I’ve not felt anything at all and I’m getting worried.

I am a massive worrier anyway as have had 2 miscarriages so please refrain from sarcy comments. It’s Sunday otherwise I’d be going to get a heartbeat check. I am convinced I’m going to see blood every time I go to the loo- probably trauma from my last miscarriage which was at 11 weeks and very traumatic. It’s just under 24 hours since I’ve felt anything. Is this normal?

Can you ring triage? I'm a community midwife and we work 7 days a week so would be able to do a listen in on a Sunday.

GlobetrottingPercy · 04/08/2024 07:47

If you are in any doubt at all, ring your maternity assessment unit and explain that you haven’t felt any movement in a while. The number will be in your pregnancy notes? I have had to go in twice with both pregnancies and they have been very understanding each time - they will never make you feel stupid for calling.

Would they see me just for reassurance? As in without any pain or bleeding. Thank you 😊

I have already been in 3 times, at 14, 16 and 17 weeks. They are open 9-5 Mon-Fri so I could either wait til tomorrow or I might try triage

@Barb20 Please call your midwife or local hospital and get checked. They can still help on a Sunday. Completely agree with @littlemissalwaystired
im sure everything will be fine but best to get some reassurance xx

Reduced movement is a reason to be seen, you don't need to be bleeding. Movement isn't as reliable at this stage in a pregnancy so I would try not to panic, but it should still he checked out.

Barb20 · 04/08/2024 07:55

@EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness I did go in on Thursday for similar worries and the midwife said it’s better to call the community midwife team if I haven’t had any pain or bleeding and just want a check for reassurance. I might wait til 9am and then give them a ring. Thanks 😊

I remember my midwife saying drink really cold water, it did work to help move my daughter when I was pregnant.

LolaJ87 · 04/08/2024 08:03

I had the same at about 26 weeks. I phoned up and was told to try a few things (cold drink, eating something sweet, lying on my side) and if there was still nothing in an hour, to come on in.

It didn’t work so I went in, they did a quick scan and then hooked me up to a monitor for a couple of hours. He was actually active for some of it but the way he was positioned just meant I wasn’t feeling it. This is more common when you’ve started feeling movements early. I still hadn’t felt anything but they were happy with the readings so sent me on my way. I went for some food with my mam having spent a few hours in the hospital, and as soon as I started eating my spicy chicken he was back to hopping about. Typical!

Give the hospital a call. They would almost always rather check all is ok. It is very early though, but even them telling you that it’s normal to happen would probably put your mind at ease?

MoosesOnGooses · 04/08/2024 08:17

It’s worth ringing them, but be mindful some hospitals will not consider it reduced movements until you are over 20 weeks.

CortieTat · 04/08/2024 08:32

Drink a small glass of regular, very cold coke or pepsi. The cold makes you body temperature drop a bit, the sugar in fizzy drink spikes your blood sugar levels and caffeine is a weak stimulant. Your baby is likely to respond to all three changes with increased movement.

Thefaceofboe · 04/08/2024 09:18

If you can get checked for reassurance then definitely do but from my experience they didn’t care till I was much further on about reduced movements. 17 weeks is very early

Thefaceofboe · 04/08/2024 09:19

Sorry posted too soon

17 weeks is very early but it doesn’t mean the worry is any less x

minnieot · 04/08/2024 09:39

I completely get your worry, I went in several times in the early weeks for reduced movements, and just hearing the heartbeat helps so much. Just remember, baby is still SO tiny and they can wiggle into positions where you won't feel anything super easily, nobody expects movements to be consistent very early on. I had days where I felt loads and days where I felt almost nothing up until at least 24/25 weeks, and even then they weren't the most consistent yet. But always go in for reassurance if that's what you need, nobody will judge you for it xx

I came to say the same…ice water

FloofPaws · 04/08/2024 10:52

I was also going to f to say a very cold drink, cola if you don't mind drinking it when pregnant.
FWIW I was feeling movement at 15 weeks with second, it was 2-4 days non stop almost then it completely stopped for 10 days. The baby is very small and may just have moved in a different space, probably kicking against the placenta so you can't feel it, so do try not to get overly worried - I've had multiple
Miscarriages and was also terrified, what will be will be and I'm sure your baby will be just perfect - do call the mw team though or hospital and get some support.
Another thing to remember is that even when they're really big, I've been hooked up to a monitor even at 39 weeks and used a clicker to indicate when I felt kicks, the monitor actually picked up probably 10x more kicks than I felt, every time (I had suspected pre-eclampsia so went in a few times, so even if you can't feel it it doesn't mean it's
Not kicking
Good luck

Kinsters · 04/08/2024 11:13

I've had many miscarriages and I'm now 28 weeks pregnant. I did have concerns about reduced movements in the earlier weeks when I'd first started feeling her but I never went in. Firstly because I didn't think it would be reassuring, except in the moment. I knew I'd get home and start having the same worries. Secondly, there is nothing they can do at an early gestation. If (and it's hugely unlikely) anything is wrong then finding out earlier won't make any difference. That's just how I feel about it though.

minnieot · 04/08/2024 14:10

Just to mention, don't worry if none of the "tricks" work, because the tricks aren't going to magically make your baby a lot bigger and move into a position where you can feel them, it's literally just your gestation, completely normal to go a long time without feeling them x

Peonies12 · 04/08/2024 14:26

I’d contact them but you wouldn’t expect a pattern til much later. I had no movement that early on. And they can only do the proper monitoring from 26 weeks.

T2024 · 04/08/2024 18:40

I felt movements from 14ish weeks, (2nd pregnancy) by 16/17 weeks I had a change in movement for a day or so - baby had moved into a different position. I found lying down in bed on my left side during this time helpful as I felt movement then until he changed position again.

I know how stressful it is, I'm 20 weeks and still worry about movements! If you're worried, definitely get a midwife to listen in with doppler x

Echobelly · 04/08/2024 18:43

Hoping all is OK. My first stopped moving for a day or two at about 20 weeks but I was on holiday and had just spent a few days doing a lot of walking and I read that sometimes you can just tire them out doing a lot of stuff and moving around a lot more than usual. Or, as others have said, may be a change in position.

LizzeyBenett · 04/08/2024 18:49

It might just be the position of the placenta . I know they tell you to drink something cold or try lying on your side or drink a sugary drink if you don't feel movement but I'm not 100% sure if it applies that early on. I was told you might just feel anything u til 26 weeks and not to panic if I don't . Once I felt my baby though I was obsessed and went in once as I was concerned all was fine she just wasn't an overly active baby.

Barb20 · 25/08/2024 18:11

I went to the MAC after posting this and never came back to update it-
needless to say baby was fine. I’m now 20 + 6 and feeling him move regularly, especially after food! The worries never stop for me 😅 thanks everyone for your responses x
