Pregnancy

Talk about every stage of pregnancy, from early symptoms to preparing for birth.

Advice please - Is this right - apparently I have to see a GP before I can book in with the midwife - and then I have to wait until 10 weeks before I can have a booking in appointment.

I apologise from the outset that I can't do emoticons as dd1 has spilt coffee on the keyboard and some of the keys stick!

My old doctors surgery has closed so am with a new fandangled one.

Just found out I am expecting dc3 so went to surgery to arrange a booking in appointment and told must see a gp first -why - I never did at my old practice.

Then told the midwife won't want to see me before 10 weeks anyway - hey!

I explained that I would need to have a booking appointment no later that 7 weeks as I would need to have a dating scan at the Fetal Care Unit at about 8 weeks so that I could have a CVS at about 12 weeks - wouldn't be able to arrange this if I saw the midwife at 10 weeks!

I explained I am 41 and did this for my last 2 pregnancies - and obviously older now.

The receptionist said " Well the midwife may see you before"

Do I have to see the GP first, can I just book in to see the midwife andor can I just book myself into the Fetal Care Unit for a scan

Would be grateful for guidance.

Thanks

In my PCT, you would have to see the GP first.

If I were you, I would see the GP and explain that you need to see the midwife immediately. If he doesn't refer you to them, could you call them directly?

3littlefrogs · 14/04/2008 18:41

Just make an appointment to see the GP. It is none of the receptionist's business anyway. The GP will probably refer you straight to the hospital.

Weegle · 14/04/2008 18:43

I had to do this and booking in appointment wasn't until 10 weeks but I could contact the midwives directly before then if needed.

I would just make an appointment with GP and bypass the receptionist.

Congratulations!

I can't remember what happened first time around, but this time I saw my GP at 5 weeks and he 'booked me in' at my hospital of choice and told me I would have an official booking in appointment with MW at around 11-14 weeks, around the same time as the nuchal scan.

MissingMyHeels · 14/04/2008 18:50

I saw GP at 6 weeks and had my booking in with MW at 15 weeks but my GP booked my scan at same time as doing MW referral so maybe he could do that for your CVS?

TheBlonde · 14/04/2008 19:01

I would just go see the GP
Here you see the GP, they do the hosp and MW team referral

MrsTittleMouse · 14/04/2008 19:20

I saw the GP and then didn't see the MW until 10 weeks. That was standard at our practise too. I was told that it was because it wasn't my first baby. So I am no longer "special".

oliviaelanasmum · 14/04/2008 19:22

It's the same at my doctors, im 12 weeks and haven't even seen the mw yet! Hoping to get a scan in the next few weeks!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 14/04/2008 19:24

It's usual to see the GP first then have booking in at about 10 weeks, dating scan at 12-14 weeks, but if you need different treatment then you just need to tell the GP when you go. What does the receptionist know?

hotmama · 14/04/2008 20:06

Thanks for all your advice. Hopefully the GP will refer me directly to the FCU if I have to wait for the midwife.

NHS cutbacks - tsk - I got seen at 6 weeks with both my dd's.
