Aspirin for small baby?

Anyone advised to take aspirin because 1st baby was tiny baby and doctors think taking aspirin for 2nd baby might help increase baby weight?

I was told I might have to take aspirin because 1st baby was tiny baby but they also said it might be (most likely I think) because I myself am quite petite and my BP etc is all normal and actually on lower side. So other than low BMI, I don't have any other things that make me qualify for it.

Is someone in similar situation and did not take aspirin? I don't want to unnecessarily take extra medicines when I don't have to.

I have been advised to take aspirin due to my BMI being too low at the booking in appt and also having hyperemesis.

They put me on 150mg but it made me even more sick. My midwife told me it was my choice if I didn't want to take it with it making me more sick, but they had to 'officially' stick to the advice on telling me to take it. So I've just been taking 75mg every few days. I've got a growth scan Thursday to check how baby is doing

My first born was 1st centile so I was also advised to take 150mg aspirin a day. I did have blood pressure issues also though.

Ive taken aspirin many yrs ago for something else and it gave me horrible stomach pain and gastric issues and i had to do a course of omrapezole to find it which is why I'm even more reluctant to go on it. I mean I'm petite built with low BMI naturally so makes sense to have a small baby. I don't know why they don't use logic sometimes

What do you mean by tiny?

I took it due to my BMI and First pregnancy - 2 risk factors. I took the minimal amount. I developed anemia and ICP which I believe caused DS1 to be 6lbs at birth he was average but petite.
This time I atayed on top of the anemia and no ICP and baby is 50th centile!

Tiny baby i.e small or low weight baby. Even clothes are sold with "tiny baby" tag in Asda etc for babies less than 6pound weight

Because this logic doesn't apply. There have been plenty of studies into why petite women sometimes have smaller babies, but it's more often to do with things that happen during pregnancy than purely they're small themselves so have smaller babies.

If you don't want to take it that is of course your right, but please speak to them and ask for more info so you can make a more informed decision. There are also different forms of asprin if you've taken it before and found it harsh.

People are confusing different indications
Aspirin to reduce risk of a small baby (generally considered to be previous child <10th centile for gestation at delivery) - 150 mg aspirin once day needs to be started before 16 weeks.

Aspirin to reduce risk of pre eclampsia - 150 mg at night starting after 12 weeks and before 20 weeks gestation
If x1 of high blood pressure (normally or in a previous pregnancy), diabetes, chronic kidney disease, lupus, APLS
x2 of first pregnancy, older than 40yrs, >10 years since last pregnancy, pre eclampsia in mother / sister, BMI >35, multiple pregnancy

Aspirin to reduce risk miscarriage (not evidence based, unlike the others) 75 - 150mg after embryo transfer / pregnancy test

I’ve think they’re asking how tiny your first baby was?

my 1st had IUGR and I took aspirin for this pregnancy and baby also has IUGR and expected to be under 5lb when I have her next week. I think it’s to help with blood flow to the placenta

Lozza2503 · 04/08/2024 11:52

I advised to take 150 aspirin from 12 weeks and blood thinners as daughter was 3rd percentile however that was because they found I had blood flow issues to placenta

If you’ve been told to take it then you should do. It’s not just about preventing a small baby, it sounds like they are talking about IUGR, which can be fatal, and aspirin is the preventive treatment. IUGR is often caused by tiny clots in the placenta. Your blood gets stickier in pregnancy and for some women this causes issues. As you’ve already had one baby with a low birth weight your doctors want to take precautions against this. If this is a possible cause then it’s a really easy treatment.

I’ve got APS, and IUGR can be a complication of this, so I take aspirin every day, and add a heparin injection in pregnancy. I don’t get indigestion from it as the NHS prescribe the gastric coated pills.

I do get indigestion when pregnant though so took omeprazole through both pregnancies. I don’t know any pregnant women who didn’t need some sort of antacid in pregnancy.

It’s absolutely your choice whether you take these or not, but be aware that these pills could be the difference between a successful pregnancy and a sad ending, and you don’t get to go back in time for a do over. I’ve had 4 losses, 3 of which ‘might’ have been helped if I’d had aspirin. It’s just not worth the risk x
