Will I ever feel normal again? Struggling with first pregnancy

I’ve really struggled in pregnancy - it’s my first. I’ve had hyperemesis since 7 weeks and now at 26 weeks - it has improved but I am still being sick every now and again even with medication. Alongside that I still have an aversion to food pretty much every evening and struggle to eat evening meals. Plus the general discomfort which comes alongside pregnancy.

Will I ever feel ‘normal’ again? Right now it feels like I’ll never be able to eat properly again, and it’s really impacting my mental health. I can handle the discomfort because I know that will definitely change as the baby won’t be taking up all the space but I’m so worried that I’ll never be able to eat normally again!

I know there are probably many people who have had a much more difficult pregnancy than I have, but can someone reassure me that I’ll feel more normal healthwise after the baby arrives? Other than the newborn tiredness and all the other challenges which come post-partum!)

Luckily my sickness reduced after 1st trimester, but I’ve never heard of anyone having sickness once baby is out! So every chance you’ll feel fine. In my first trimester I found I had more appetite during the day so I had a hot / balanced meal at lunchtime, then felt less pressured in the evening so would just have some cereal. Is that an option for you?

I'm still in my first pregnancy but I was talking to a friend this week who has two kids and had sickness all the way through with at least one of them - she said the amazing thing was how instantly her sickness vanished as soon as she gave birth. She didn't notice for a few hours obviously as was caught up with the baby but then was like wait... I'm hungry... I don't feel nauseous...

So yes it should vanish and go back to normal as soon as baby arrives!

God you are literally my twin. I was just coming on this forum to ask the same question - genuinely. I'm 14 weeks with hyperemis and it's suddenly got a lot worse after a few weeks on ondansetron which was really helping me. Between the sickness, weird back pain, feeling oddly full, tiredness and constipation, I am SO fucking fed up with life at the moment. I keep thinking that I'll be stuck feeling like this after pregnancy too, and that thought honestly makes me feel very despondent. No advice really, as it's also my first baby, but I totally understand how you're feeling - you're not alone at all. Hope it picks up soon.

Sending you all the positivity, I totally get it!! Everyone kept telling me how amazing I would feel in second trimester and I just never had the glow up feeling! I tried Cyclizine, which made me worse, metaclopromide but it stopped working and now Xonvea which has made a big difference!

I’m a lot better than I was in terms of sickness, but then other things started creeping in, just can’t catch a break! Trying to stay positive is so so challenging when you feel so physically unwell, I really hope you start to feel better soon 💜

You will, I promise. And if it’s any comfort, in my experience the more horrible the pregnancy, the more you enjoy the newborn phase!

Thankyou 🙏🏻 yeah I’m trying to get more nutrition in during the day and then just struggle through the evening! Cereal and toast has been so helpful though for sure!

It gets better. I promise. There's always something tho both pre and post partum. Try and ride the roller coaster, get through each day, try and see the positives in each day and accept any help and rest and listen to your body x

It does get better. I had food aversions and vomiting the whole time although the vomiting eased towards the end/ last trimester. I ate cos I had to and bland stuff that I could stomach, but not really cos I wanted to.

It is very strange- as soon as I had the baby I felt great and could eat and drink as normal! It was like a switch had gone off. I know you have a few months to go, but just think you will feel better soon. Now my issue is eating too much as I never thought it like food again :)

Solidarity xx

The absolute second the baby is born you will feel normal. Other mums are exhausted etc but you will be so relieved to be over the awful feeling you will feel great. A cup of tea will be like heaven. Been there 3 times and have to say l found the newborn stage brilliant after those absolutely horrible 9 months.
It's not easy..hang in there. I felt like poison was injected into my body but the relief when it ended.

I had HG with my first the entire pregnancy, the second that placenta was birthed from my body I felt INSTANTLY better. It was like a switch. The midwives couldn't believe I'd just given birth as I was practically skipping around the ward because I didn't feel sick anymore!!

I'm 32+2 on my 2nd (and last!!!) pregnancy now, still feeling horrendous and vomiting every day, and all that is motivating me is that feeling I had knowing I'll get it again. I can't wait to feel healthy again. And eat whatever I want again with no aversions or dread eating.

Oh and I really enjoyed the newborn phase, nothing bothered me because I felt nothing was worse than how I felt whilst I was pregnant. The sleepless nights etc didn't bother me, because I wasn't being sick. I was on a high for months 😂

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 29/07/2024 21:37

Oh and take a snack bag into hosp for labour I was ravenous in the couple days post partum after having all kinds of food aversion.
I couldn't even eat pizza when I was pregnant ffs

It's so so shit, isn't it. Honestly some days I just don't have the energy for feeling so crap! I tried cyclizine and prochloperazine which helped a bit but left me a zombie. I think ondansetron helps me a lot, but then makes me constipated, which makes me sick - vicious cycle isn't it!! I really hope you feel better soon - and I'm SO grateful you started this thread. Reading all these cheery messages of how much better people felt has made my night. Sending lots of love ❤️

Survivor of two HG pregnancies here! You will feel normal again! HG remains the worst thing I’ve ever done including labour and c section. The food post both births tasted amazing as the minute they were out, sickness was gone. Well done for getting through it, if you can do this you can do anything.
