Low grade placental abruption?

Hoping someone has experience, because there isn't an awful lot on this online.

I'm 34 weeks and baby is measuring very very small (>3centile). I've also had spotting almost every day for the past week or so, and period-like cramps.

We're under the care of fetal medicine, and consultant today mentioned possibility of the start of a placental abruption. It would go some way to explaining why baby is so small.

My question is, how often does placental abruption begin this way? How likely is it that something physical I do could make the abruption worse? We did discuss the possibilities today but I feel like I've come away with more questions and would like to know others' experiences?

Other than to keep an eye out for increased bleeding or pain, I'm not sure what else to do or to expect really. Stories gratefully received x

Didn't want to read and run - have you spoken to your midwife today about it / what you should/shouldn't be doing as I believe placental abruption is very serious - I would imagine bed rest and close monitoring would be necessary but I have no knowledge in this!

Thanks for your reply. We've got rest and close monitoring sorted. I've just never encountered anyone who had a mild abruption and there aren't many stories online, so I just feel like I have absolutely no idea what to expect. My consultant isnt really giving me much indication.

I had a placental abruption 30 years ago! I was 33 weeks and had a bleed, more than spotting but not loads, a few days before it happened and then nothing until the abruption.
In my case the abruption was painless, but I had a sensation like a balloon popping inside me as it happened. I had read in a baby book about abruption (no internet then!) because of the bleed, so rang for an ambulance. I had an emergency c section and we were both fine
