Induction of Labour

I was found to have mild polyhydromnios at 36 week scan (deepest pool 6.3). Was given Glucose Tolerance Test at 37 weeks for which fasting result was 4.1 (fine) and post-drink result 8 (above threshold of 7.8).

Saw midwife end of last week who booked me in for induction due to gestational diabetes based on glucose result. I measured on 50th percentile with tape measure at the midwife appointment so not particularly 'big'.

Been having major regrets this weekend about booking induction. My spontaneous births are pretty straightforward, if tough, but I have had a previous induction which was long and tiring.

Am I negligent to turn down induction or can I rely on the polyhydromnios and glucose results both being 'borderline'?

Any experience / advice welcome.

Hi
I had polyh which led to scans every 2 weeks from I think it was 24 weeks. The consultant said they would look to induce around 38 weeks, however on my scan it was very mild so consultant said no need..I continued to be scanned every 2 weeks where the fluid stayed only mildly high so the consultant decided Induction wasn’t necessary.

have they booked in scans for you? If so you can always change your mind and the consultant may also change their advice.

I ended up having my waters broken at 41 weeks as my hind waters had gone and not the rest so was at risk if infection..I had a bad labour and wish I had gone naturally. Of course it’s your decision but my view is that unless induction js absolutely necessary let your body do its thing.

What gestation have they scheduled your induction for? I'm sure you could put it off for a week/10 days and ask for monitoring in the meantime?

I had GD last pregnancy but it was mild and diet controlled only, so I booked induction for my due date and went into natural labour the day before, which was pretty perfect!

Read Dr Sarah Wickmans book and blog posts on the subject.
She is a research Midwife and looks at all the scientific evidence on this. Here is her boomk. This may help you make a decision.

I loved her approach and the facts it helped me decline a stretch and sweep and talk of inductions.
