Consultant appointment at 36 weeks?

I am currently 25 weeks and have been midwife led all through my pregnancy, very standard pregnancy (so far!)

I’ve just had a letter through saying I will see a consultant at 36 weeks. I’m a bit confused as I haven’t been consultant led, does anyone know what this is for/what will be discussed in it?

thanks!

Was there anything in a previous pregnancy, or more likely delivery, that might trigger the need to speak to a Constant, perhaps? A third or fourth degree tear or stuck shoulder or something?

Your community midwife/team should be able to tell you why you were referred. It should have been discussed either at your booking appointment or whenever your situation changed from mlc to CLC.

@DoloresOnTheDottedLine @Where2GoNext this is my first pregnancy and everything has been completely standard thus far! As far as I’m aware I’m supposed to be midwife led throughout - never been told otherwise. So confused! I have emailed my midwife to ask

The only thing I can think is I’m with an out of area midwife, but not sure why that would mean I need to see the consultant

Was anything brought up at the 20 week scan? Baby measuring bigger/smaller? Gestational diabetes? I would just contact your midwife and ask. Could just be a mistake x

rainbow616 · 27/07/2024 19:56

Sorry, just seen you said you have emailed midwife x

@rainbow616 all measurements were within the normal limits and they said all looked good! My blood pressure was slightly high on first reading at my 25 week appointment but then it went back down to normal on the second. Hopefully she replies tomorrow!

Sounds like it could just be an admin error, perhaps? Good luck anyway and hopefully you get a nice reassuring response from your midwife shortly.

OP how old are ? Pretty sure I had a consultant apt at 36 wks with my second (and last) child. I delivered aged 36 years.

36 is definitely not medically old

Friend is 43 and midwife led

@OptimismvsRealism happy to be told I’m out of date. The child I was referring to is now a 21 year old.

Just stating my experience, I turned 36 a week before my hospital check up at 17 weeks. This made me a geriatric mother. I was offered and strongly advised to have an amniocentesis test. Long awaited baby after secondary infertility. I was determined to have the baby whatever. Consultant literally wrote mother refused testing over my notes and made a huge thing over it. As it turned out ,my daughter does have intellectual disabilities but an amniocentesis test would not have picked that up. No regrets.

@fortifiedwithtea I’m 30! So definitely not old enough for that (I don’t think!)

I will update this thread when I find out haha

Update for anyone interested-

I phoned the hospital and they said the only thing they can see that it might be is where I told my midwife I had a reaction to the anaesthetic when I had it years ago. But she said it was likely an admin error as I’m not having a c section and it would be with the anaesthetist not the consultant anyway 😅 so it has been cancelled now!

Ah brilliant, good news ☺️

MixedCouple2 · 30/07/2024 14:43

Sounds like an error. I would just call up and enquire / cancel.

Thanks for updating us and that’s great news. Hope the rest of your pregnancy is nice and smooth.
