Listeria concerns

Hi, I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant. I ate at a pub yesterday, ordered the most inoffensive choice on the menu, a vegan mushroom wellington. Took a few bites and thought it tasted pretty lukewarm, bit into the centre and swallowed it before realising it was still icy! Spoke to the manager who said they'd bring out a 'fresh' one in 7 minutes, so clearly a frozen meal microwaved. This is supposedly a 5 star food hygiene establishment who don't know how to cook in a microwave properly. I'm now worrying about their storage methods and the possible food contaminants, mainly listeria, that if god forbid present, would have not be killed off with their shoddy cooking method. My understanding is it can take up to 2 months for symptoms of listeriosis to show and it can be devastating. My question is, has anyone had a test for listeria before and how long did they wait before having it? Have already tied to contact my maternity unit and cannot get through. Many thanks.

Hope you're feeling ok today? Whilst it's not good at all that the restaurant served uncooked food, I really wouldn't worry about getting food poisoning from this.

If it was a vegan mushroom wellington there wouldn't be anything like meat or soft cheese that would need cooking first. Also if it's microwaved it's likely pre-cooked and just needs heating up. Plus you only ate a very small amount.

I have emetophobia so have had a fair few panics myself this pregnancy (including some goats cheese with rind I had on a pizza last weekend!) but try to remind myself that food poisoning is still pretty rare and it sounds like you're being as careful as possible.

Thank you so much for your reassurance, good to hear I'm not the only one panicking about things!

I was quite paranoid in first pregnancy, and by third I was eating everything, prawn sandwiches from the shops and everything, was totally fine. Not saying to be reckless but not very common to get listeria so try not to worry especially as it wasn't meat or cheese

I was eating pre-packed melon and pre-packed sandwiches by the trolly load in the first three or four weeks of my pregnancy. I had a whippy ice cream too. I had absolutely no idea about listeria and went into a panic when I found out all of those things are risky for it.

I avoid it all now, but from what I've read, it's quite rare. I do wish there were better resources for finding out these things. I'd say if the meal you had was frozen and microwaved, it would have had to have been pre-cooked, so risk is unlikely.

I wish I was less paranoid; this is my second pregnancy (fourth if you count two miscarriages 🥺). I guess I was a LOT worse with my first but never actually ate anything that was completely undercooked!

Assuming you haven’t been unwell since then, I really wouldn’t worry.

The chance of getting Listeria it is extremely low in England and Wales, with 0.27 cases per 100,000 population.

2sisters wow, crazy stats, that makes me feel a million times better! Thanks
