Maternity pay - Teacher

Hello! I have been a teacher for 3 years and am about to go into my 4th year. I haven't had a break but I will be starting a new school in September 2024 but am currently 11 weeks pregnant due Feb! My current school isn't an academy, my new school is a grammar school in an academy (but the only school in the academy..) and both schools are under the same LA, same council. I think I only qualify for maternity allowance but wanted to see if I could qualify for SMP or even enhanced. I haven't officially been given a contract at me new school as they need to see my new DBS so don't want to ask them. Is it ok to tell them at the end of Sept that I'm expecting so I know what to budget? Thanks!! 😘

I think you’re right. You need to have worked there for 26 weeks by the time you are 25 weeks along. You will get Maternity Allowance.

I agree with above poster, you should get mat allowance. You could look into shared parental leave and ‘return’ to work for the Easter and summer breaks to get full pay during those times x

If they recognise your continuous service within the LA (we would but are maintained schools) you will get enhanced pay. Only way to know is to look at your contract
