Persistent UTI

I'm about fifteen weeks pregnant. Following a routine urine sample at my first midwife appointment when I was about eight weeks pregnant, I was diagnosed with a UTI for which the midwife prescribed antibiotics, Nitrofurantoin I believe. I took these for as week, as instructed, before providing a second sample to my GP a week after completing the course of tablets. My GP called me to inform me that the sample was still showing an infection and gave me a week of Amoxicillin to take. During a pre-natal appointment on Tuesday, after I had finished the Amoxicillin, the midwife informed me that the infection was still present and they have now recommended that I begin taking ongoing antibiotics, rather than short courses, to try and tackle it.
I have not had accute symptoms from the UTI, increased need to urinate andvery mild stomach pain but nothing else. I am told that UTIs are common in pregnancy but I am concerned by how persistent this one appears to be. I am on medication for rheumatoid arthritis which can lower the body's resistance to infections, but I have not knowingly suffered from many UTIs in the past, though if symptoms were this mild I may well have had them and not realised.
I'm just being hyper-vigilent at the moment because I don't want this to hurt my baby. If anyone has any experience of recurrent UTIs in pregnancy and how you dea lt with it I'd be grateful. I really need some reassurance as this is troubling me.

I have spoken to the midwife today and they now have the full results for the culture of my urine test from Tuesday. They say that the number of bacteria has reduced but is still present. They have recommended yet another type of antibiotics which I will begin tomorrow. I'm just very worried as I have read that poorly treated UTIs can lead to miscarriage in extreme circumstances. I'm hoping that the fact that my UTI is improving, while not yet gone, and the fact that my white blood cell count and inflamatory markers are fine as well as a lack of any but the mildest UTI symptoms mean that this infection is not yet a cause for concern, but I can't help worrying. I suffer from anxiety at the best of times but pregnancy has caused my anxiety to spike, as I worry that every single thing I do or don't do may harm my baby. If anyone's had experience of a recurrent UTI in pregnancy that they would be willing to share I'd be so grateful.

Is it ecoli?

Pinkbonbon · 26/07/2024 13:53

You poor thing. Is it linked to the pregnancy do they know?

Only thing I can say is make sure your partner is showering before sex and washing his bits properly. And always use condoms. Just saw some stats about how men don't actually wash their things properly and its put me off ever having sex again 😆

I've never had a uti and I've never had sex without a condom so I do wonder if there's a link for many women. The man.

Maybe you're getting better and he's screwing it up again?

Of course I dunno if pregnancy can cause them too?

Feel better soon op x

Yes, it's ecoli which I believe is the most common cause of UTIs.
My midwife told me that UTIs are common in pregnancy and can often be asymptomatic, which is why they screen for them routinely at midwife visits since so many pregnant women can have them without being aware.
I'm sure it's not being caused by sex, I've been far too terrified to have sex since getting pregnant since, while I know it's supposed to be safe, it just doesn't feel safe to me. As I said, I'm in a constant state of paranoia at the moment.
I shower regularly, but not using scented soaps, shower gels, etc. as I'm told that can cause problems.
I've been suffering from severe bouts of constipation and subsequent hemorrhoids in my first trimester, and the midwife told me that this can lead to UTI's as the pressure from the full bowel can cause the bladder to not empty fully. Sorry for all the gory details.
Thanks for your replies.

Pregnancy lowers your immunity to infection …..so you have a higher risk to any infection
