Open oven

I opened the oven and got down in front of it flip some food on a tray. Hot steam was obviously coming out but it wasn’t too bad that I couldn’t stand it and I was only there for a very brief moment but then all of a sudden a hotter rush of steam came through and I felt a bit hotter and now I’m worried: will I have harmed the baby ? :(

Of course you won't have harmed the baby, I can't even envisage how you think that would be possible.

An anxiety level this high isn't great for the baby though, so perhaps you should speak to your midwife about it if this isn't a one-off worry.

missshilling · 24/07/2024 17:36

It was steam, not gamma radiation. The baby will be fine.

VolvoFan · 24/07/2024 17:36

I get this same worry when I take baths. As long as it's only brief, then no harm done. Anything that exceeds your core body temperature for prolonged periods might raise risk. But a few seconds is completely harmless. It's like getting into a hot car and then whacking on the air conditioning. As long as the heat is brief, your baby will be fine.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 24/07/2024 17:37

Of course not- don’t worry. Women work in all kinds of jobs involving heat and it doesn’t affect their babies (baristas, chefs…)

S1lverCandle · 24/07/2024 17:37

What exactly do you think might have happened, op? This is baffling.

A rush of steam from the oven doesn't raise your core body temperature Confused. Neither does a bath at a temperature you can actually tolerate.

Likemyjealouseel · 24/07/2024 17:39

If you didn’t damage your own skin, the baby will be fine.

Catlover1705 · 24/07/2024 17:39

I assume this is your first baby and you're feeling anxious. There's zero chance of harming the baby so don't worry.

WhereIsTheHare · 24/07/2024 17:40

OP, you’ve posted a lot lately with panics about things you’ve eaten potentially damaging your baby. It seems you’ve got an unusually high degree of anxiety about your pregnancy, and you might need some help to overcome it. Please speak to your midwife or GP about how you are feeling, so you can relax and enjoy your pregnancy properly.

Exceeding your core body temperature by say, sitting in a steam room or a sauna, has been associated with increased risk of neural tube defects in the baby.

This is a result of decreased blood pressure to the baby as the blood is being diverted to the surface of the skin in an attempt to cool down. A rush of steam won't raise it, no, but it will if it's prolonged, ie half an hour, an hour, two hours etc. I've done IVF and will be doing one last round at some point, and one of the things they are strict about is hot baths. Even if you can tolerate a hot bath that turns you lobster red, it's not advised. If you've already got children, then the worries just don't exist. But if this is OP's first baby and it took them years to conceive, the anxiety is understandable.

otravezempezamos · 24/07/2024 18:17

Is this a wind up?
You honestly think you have harmed a baby by getting hot?

Beanz089 · 24/07/2024 20:44

Yes, in hindsight it is ridiculous. 🤦🏻‍♀️am not usually an anxious person at all but this time for some reason I had a bit of a short lived panic.
much thanks all
