Should I be concerned about this blood pressure reading at 25 weeks?

I had my 25 week midwife appointment today and my first blood pressure reading when I got there (after a 15 min walk and a subway just before haha) was 146/71.

The midwife then took it again about ten mins later and it was 133/80. The only other thing to mention is my ankles are slightly swollen, but I feel fine in myself. Should I be worried or will I be ok to wait til my next midwife apt? Thanks!

What did your midwife say? Did you do a urine dipstick thing? If you're worried you could ask for a repeat blood pressure reading, I'm sure they'd do one (or you can have it done at the pharmacy!).

I should think the journey there and the fact that it’s quite warm at the moment played a part. I think that reading is definitely something that can wait until your next appointment. What did your midwife say?

My BP often hovered around a similar place to that throughout both my pregnancies. I would sometimes be sent to the hospital to have it monitored for a couple of hours, but the only time I was ever given medication was during induction when it wouldn't come down on its own. I think they will only do further checks/prescribe medication if it is consistently high after an hour or so, or if they find other concerns e.g. protein in wee etc.

V good excuse to put your feet up (if you can!)

@bravotango @Normalinnit ah I should’ve said that my urine was tested and there was no protein which is good! She didn’t seem worried after the second reading so maybe I can just wait.. just Google scared me a bit as it’s higher than the normal range of 120/80.

@cinnamonbiscuit that’s good to know, thanks! Let’s hope it’s ok at the next appointment. I actually commute almost 2 hours each way into London for work so I’m wondering if I should ask to WFH soon.. definitely no putting my feet up while doing that, it’s exhausting!

My BP was much higher than normal today (usually struggle with low BP about 90-100 / 55-60) but today 120/70.
I think it might be the heat & how humid it is? Obv get checked if you're concerned but thought I'd jump on x

llihl13 · 24/07/2024 17:51

@anonhop yeah the heat definitely could have something to do with it! And my swollen ankles lol. DH has suggested going to the local docs office in a few days and checking using the BP machine in the waiting area so might do that just to put my mind at rest x

My blood pressure at my 16 week appointment was really high when the midwife first took it - I had just walked to the GP practice and had only been sat down in the waiting area for a few seconds when I was called in. After sitting for a bit in the appointment she took another reading and it was fine - if your midwife wasn't worried then I don't think you should be. I've now taken to arriving 10 minutes before my appointment time so I can sit for a little while in the waiting area and it seems to be working as my BP has been normal first time at my appointments since then!

Blood pressure machines are available to buy in boots for £21.50. You could buy your own, keep an eye on it and track it? I have found this really helpful as I am able to tell whether the reading the midwife does at appointments is in line with my usual measurements, or not.

Thanks ladies, I went to the GP this morning and had two readings of 124/75 and 118/72 so I can breathe a sigh of relief! Must’ve been more nervous for my midwife appointment than I thought 😂
