Hi all
im TTC and been prescribed utrogestan for short Luteal phase defect by my GP.

when I Google it’s often a HRT treatment

I’m sure it is fine - I had it once I fell pregnant until week 16.. due to history of losses!
it’s used for many things - it’s progesterone so just helps your body relax and gives that hormone a boost!

My partner also takes it and we did a lot of research on it. Some studies actually show that it may decrease the risk if pregnancy loss. Our nurse says that it makes the uterus "stronger".

Thankyou. How did you take it ?

Thankyou. How did you take it ?

Twice daily 200mg vaginal. It could increase pregnancy symptoms but minimally, in our experience. Of course everyone reacts differently but it is proven safe for the baby and mother.

Was it helpful in your case?

Yes definitely. I’ve had 2 successful pregnancies (well one I’m still going through) for both times I used it.
very grateful for it!
it’s used for HRT but also miscarriages and bleeding, and even when people are going through IVF.

Hope it all works out for you x

The dose seems fine for the purpose (luteal phase defect). I don’t have any experience with 100 mg but I was prescribed 200 mg after a non-hrt (natural) frozen embryo transfer to support my own progesterone production and 800 mg after a fresh embryo transfer (when you don’t have your own progesterone because your potential corpus luteum has been destroyed during the egg retrieval)

I’m currently pregnant and I’m taking 400 mg because that’s what I have at home and taking 800 mg after getting pregnant naturally is a bit of an overkill as my body is still making my own progesterone. It’s very safe and unlike artificial oestrogen (estradiol valerate) it’s of natural origin and bio identical to progesterone our body makes.

How many mg per pill/capsule?

Hello.

I hope you don't mind me piggy backing on this utrogestan chat.

Back story - have been TTC for 39 cycles. Conceived cycle 16 but it was a loss at 6+5.

After no help from NHS GP I paid to see private gyne who diagnosed short luteal defect (and low thyroid - prescribed levothyrozine).

I've been prescribed 200mg of utrogestan daily for the luteal phase defect whilst TTC. Have been taking for about 6 months but in oral tablets version. This cycle, I was prescribed vaginal version (200mg at bedtime) to try instead.

Well I'm now 4 days late, my BBT went back up this morning, but I keep getting BFN!

With the oral version of utrogestan, my period came and then I stopped the tablets.

Does the same happen with vaginal? Or am I never going to get my period until I stop taking it?

Obviously I want a BFP but it doesn't feel like it's coming :(

Any experience or advice would be appreciated. Chart below:

Thanks
Xxx

@aggiemay24 for me I never bled while taking utrogestan. If I got a negative test after my period was due I stopped using it, and then would get my period a few days later. If you're getting negative tests four days after your period is due, you should stop the uteogestan. Your period should arrive within a few days!

mushroomushroom · 22/01/2025 08:37

@aggiemay24 PS your BBT is up because what actually elevates it is progesterone, so while you're on utrogestan it won't go back down like it would in a "normal" cycle.

Thanks Mushroom.

With the oral version (same dose) my period came as usual and then I stopped the Utrogestan, starting again after the next ovulation.

I think the vaginal version is working better than the oral version, hence why it's keeping my period at bay. I won't take it tonight and hopefully my period will come back, so we can try again. I've also got to start Clomid this next cycle.

I did wonder about stopping the Utrogestan last night, but I was optimistic for a belated BFP, and I was told to keep taking Utrogestan even when I get the BFP.

I'll stop tonight and see what happens. My cycles are never more than 25 days, and we're on CD28 today.

I'll see what tomorrow brings after not taking Utrogestan tonight. I do wish the doctors would explain things properly! And there's nothing in the instructions as it all relates to HRT administration rather than for TTC.
