Cervical Polyp While Pregnant

I went for my cervical screening earlier this week, the morning before I found out I was pregnant. The nurse found a cervical polyp and she described it as ‘large’. She contacted the dr to come in and look but she was with another patient and was unable to. She did the screening as normal and the polyp bled a little on contact with the brush. She didn’t really comment on it when I asked her if it was an issue.

I haven’t had any bleeding during sex or between my periods at all. Literally no signs of a polyp symptom wise. I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks back in April.

I found out that afternoon that I’m pregnant again. So very grateful but now horrified after googling cervical polyp in pregnancy and the most awful things come up about miscarriage and preterm birth.

Has anyone had one before during pregnancy? Thank you for listening.

Sorry to hear that.

I had a cervical polyp in my last pregnancy. It was stressful as it caused a huge amount of bleeding and grew quite large (apparently this can happen in pregnancy due to increased blood flow to the uterus). Initially I was told not to worry and just to wait as it would come away during labour, but in the end the consultant decided to do surgery to remove it as it got bigger. I had the surgical procedure at 16 weeks with a spinal anaesthetic and all was fine after that. I went on to have a healthy baby who’s now a happy 2.5 year old!

I hope that’s useful to hear and not just a scare story. Feel free to ask any questions.

Try not to worry, I think polyps are common even though they can be a pain in pregnancy lots of people have them and might not even know! I would ask to be referred to gynaecology / colposcopy so someone can take a look - I got this referral via the EPU.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have a feeling this one will grow as it’s already large. I’ll definitely take your advice and contact the hospital because I already have a consultant due to being under the recurrent miscarriage clinic. I’ll see what she suggests and go from there.

I’m really reassured about your removal, for some reason I had thought they wouldn’t do anything to remove it in pregnancy.

Amazing to hear about your little one! X

I am currently 29 weeks, I found out I had cervical polyps around about 18 weeks due to a examination at triage for another reason.

My smears are all up to date, and I was referred to colposcopy clinic a couple days later just to have a clearer look where they confirmed it was polyp.
I was told that they are common in pregnancy due to the increase in hormones, may cause an increase in mucusy discharge (which is what I was getting) and cause bleeding.

I have had about 3 episodes of spotting since, mostly after a bowel movement which has been put down to the extra pressure causing polyp to bleed. I imagine I will experience more bleeding as pregnancy continues as the baby will put more pressure onto my cervix. Everytime I still phone up triage but try not to get in such a panic as I know the polyps are really vascularised.

I was seen again at 28 weeks at the clinic, just for monitoring. Where they've found another 3 polyps have joined so 5 in total now.
Dr's said they aren't concerned.
I was told things like sex etc will cause bleeding as they irritate the polyp so I have just avoided that to reduce anxiety but that's just me.

I was reassured I could have a vaginal delivery and will be seen a few months after baby born to see if they are still there, or they will remove them.

I remember the worry I initially had when I was first told I had them and all the horrible Google results, please try not to worry😊 I hope this helps x

Thank you so much, that’s really reassuring. The Google results are just horrendous! I really wish I hadn’t looked.

The nurse said nothing about being referred to colonoscopy but then again, we didn’t know I was pregnant at the time either. I will mention it to my consultant when I see her in a few weeks and see what she suggests. It definitely wasn’t there when I had my miscarriage in April because my cervix was checked so many times.

Hi hun, how have you got on, I'm 11 weeks pregnant (40 years old, 2 children and 2 stillbirths) I've had my 3rd scan today due to bleeding.
Baby is fine but they found a polyp during the examination.
The bleeding stopped while I was there this morning (between 9am to 12.30pm).
I've just wiped and the pink/red colour is back.
My anxiety is awful and don't know what to think or do xxxxx.

@Cathmorg84 sorry to hear that, have you been to EPAU for them to say that? Or was this your midwife who examined you?

I was under the recurrent miscarriage clinic with a specialist nurse and a consultant who both told me it wasn’t an issue in pregnancy and to ignore it. Luckily so far I haven’t had any issues from it, so I’m not sure if it’s still there or not? I’ve had 4 internal scans during my pregnancy so far and they pushed hard against my cervix, so I would have expected to see blood from it then but nothing?

It was in the epu, after my scan the registrar examined me and said I can see a polyp. I am using progesterone pessaries but been on them for 2 weeks. I will use them in my back entrance going forward incase I've inserted them to high. I'm also on blood thinning injections due to my age etc. When I asked the midwife after she said its like a skin tag that will need treatment after pregnancy xxx.

I am almost 37 weeks and have cervical polyps, it seemed that more appeared when I had my last exam when I was 28 weeks.
They don't cause me any issue, sometimes I get the odd bit of bleeding after a bowel movement which could be caused to pressure in the area, but that's about it.

The only thing it's made a difference in my life is that I have avoided sex this pregnancy, personal choice as I was told it could cause them to bleed, which would just increase my anxiety so decided to avoid anything penetrative.

FlowersOfSulphur · 04/09/2024 22:55

I had some bleeding when I was four months pregnant with one of my DC. When they checked out the bleeding, they discovered a cervical polyp. It bled on and off for the rest of my pregnancy and I was advised to avoid sex in case it made it bleed more, but apart from that, it didn't cause any issues and I had an uneventful vaginal delivery with DD.

They said at the time that the polyp would probably fall off as I was giving birth, and sure enough there was no sign of it at my postnatal check. Eleven years later, it has never been mentioned during smear tests and I haven't had any unexpected bleeding, so I assume it never came back.

Hi! I am 17 weeks and just recently found out I have a cervical polyp. Just wondering how you're getting on?
