Literally choking on stomach acid

I'm already taking 20mg of Omeprazole a day in the morning, and occasionally Gavisgon advance in the evening before bed but some nights I'm still getting stomach acid reflux which I'll suddenly sit up in bed with but I'm on occasion accidentally inhaling it. I then have to sit there coughing for ages to try and clear my chest with the horrible vomit taste in my mouth, im literally drowning in the stomach acid 🤢 I remember having the same thing when pregnant with DD but has anyone else experienced this? It happens no matter how early/little I eat and just seems to occur when it feels like it

I am not pregnant, but have this - it's due to a hiatus hernia in my case.

I had terrible all day sickness which didn’t stop till I was 5 months along
Then I had a week where I felt fantastic and then the heartburn set in

Gaviscon and all the medications the doctor prescribed were useless

I ended up drinking milk. I had a 1/2 litre bottle in my hand permanently and would swig it doing my shopping, walking around Mothercare, at hospital appointments, walking the dog. I couldn’t be without it for a minute and panicked if we didn’t have at least 15 litres in the fridge at any time as that meant I had enough for the next 24 hours

Inhaling it, yes! I had this when pregnant.

I had to start sleeping sitting a little more upright, using a V shaped pillow. Not quite sat up but just propped up.

No real advice but huge sympathies. It's horrible!

I'm not pregnant but I take it at night to stop it coming up when I'm lying in bed flat.

I feel it's easier for the acid to do that travelling up my gullet then than during the day when I'm upright as I'm figuring that gravity will help keep it down during the day.

I have to sit up in bed when I get an attack - even then it takes ages to clear my throat and the back of my nose, and my breathing is like sawing wood - and the vomit smell/taste sometimes brings on actual vomiting because it's so revolting.

Stop eating gluten. Resolved the issue for me

Same here. I used to get acid reflux pretty much every day until I cut gluten out. I do still get it occasionally but it usually goes within a few hours. Although tonight after a few glasses of wine and lots of crisps and chocolate I've got bad acid reflux which unfortunately mixed with the taste of wine and cheese and onion crisps takes bloody rank every time it comes up

I take my omperazole in the evenings, about 30 minutes before dinner. And then chew a Rennies just before bed. If I had the omperazole in the morning I'd throw up in the night. I expect later on I'll have to start taking a second omperazole in the mornings but for now one in the evening is enough.

Edit: so my advice would be switch your omperazole dose to the evening and see if that helps. It can take a while for the effects to build up.

There's stronger stuff than omeprazole so I would go back to the GP.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I very hardly get heartburn when I'm not pregnant but suffer from it massively when I am. Currently 32+3 weeks so counting down to the day I don't have to go through this every night 😞 I will try everything you all have suggested though to see if anything helps

That's like me too. Once in a blue moon when I'm not pregnant and even then it never makes me feel like I'll vomit and is easily sorted with a Rennies. Pregnancy indigestion is next level!

Dietary changes - GERD diet (temporary) and taking the medication in the evening helped. Cutting out, for example, spices, tomatoes, chocolate

I can only describe mine as projectile when laid down. I have to sit bolt upright and it seems to fly out. Not pleasant! During the day it’s basically like just being sick. I’ve tried and tested a lot over the last 3 weeks and here is what works for me

20mg Omeprozole morning and 20mg early evening. Gaviscon and Rennie where needed.

Eat more before 3pm - slightly bigger breakfast. And make sure I walk around after! Little snacks and then a normal lunch. After 3pm it’s safe foods only. For me I’ve found that’s porridge with raisins and toast with low fat spread. This has worked for a week. I’ve added a few spoonfuls of baked beans to my toast and that was ok too.

im pretty miserable as now can’t go out for dinner (which I love!) and stuck on a restricted diet BUT it’s much better than the alternative.
