Baby measuring large, reassurance please?

Been for my 30 week growth scan today and baby has moved up to the 92nd centile, he was on the 89th centile 2 weeks ago.

Having GTT on Friday but just a bit worried, has anybody had their baby measuring large but not ended up having gestational diabetes?

Also, if baby continues measuring large, does this mean delivery will be more difficult? I'm quite small framed so worried I might end up needing an emergency c-section and if the risk is so high for one, I feel like I might as well just have an elective one anyway?

Thank you so much in advance x

I'm still only 28+5 but went for a growth scan two weeks ago, baby was on 92nd centile, did the GTT last week and readings were normal i.e. no gestational diabetes. I was talking to the midwife about it yesterday and she said some babies are just big!

Thank you, that's reassuring to hear. Are they giving you extra monitoring? x

My DS is 18 now but I can remember at one of my scans being told that he was “one of the longest babies they’d ever seen”. He was decidedly average when born so mistakes can be made.

At my trust they will consider an earlier delivery for larger babies if the mother wishes so it may be an option for you if you are worried.

I didnt have GD with either of mine was tested both pregnancies, I was 5ft1 and 7stone14 before babies and had an 8.6 and an 9lber first was born at 40+4 second at 39 weeks. Tried to push my first out and failed, second was an elective section my choice and due to my history and his size, my growth charts were bang on. Apparently I just make very big babies haha xx

@minnieot I have an extra scan booked at 32 weeks anyway for other reasons but I think they might have booked me one if I didn't. Other than that, no!

MissyGirlie · 10/07/2024 20:23

No GD here, and 3 of the 4 were well over 9lb (so >90th centile). I had straightforward deliveries too.

But induction just because baby is measuring large isn’t always the best option.

All 3 of my DCs were measured in the 90th percentile from an early stage up until birth. They were all between 6-8lbs so I have no idea where those measurements came from! Confused

northfacespacerace · 10/07/2024 21:12

I was tested as baby was measuring large, I didn't have it but he ended up 10lb 5

minnieot · 10/07/2024 21:40

Thank you so much everyone, feeling a bit better now. Will see what my results come back as 🤞 x

Yep both mine were measuring big at scans (and the second was born big). I am 5ft 1 and 7 stone and the delivery’s were really smooth. Also my GTT was clear I just make giant babies.
My midwife says big babies help gravity do its job.

Cdoc · 10/07/2024 21:53

My DS jumped from 50th centile at 20 weeks, to 90th at 28 weeks and remained between 90-95th until birth. I didn’t have GD, but was induced at 40+1 due to worries over his size (first baby and I’m not very big). He was actually born on the 75th centile, so bigger but not as big as predicted! 8lb 3oz.

Induction for me was a positive experience though, 3 sweeps from 39 weeks and straight to breaking my waters, he arrived 8 hours after they broke them. Scans are notoriously inaccurate!

Cheeseballer · 10/07/2024 22:01

Don't let it stress you out. I had similar, small frame and baby measuring big. No gestational diabetes. I was consultant-led as they were worried about size and I was induced 2 weeks early and had a natural birth. No dramas other than some stitches. Baby was 8lb 13 and healthy. x

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/07/2024 22:06

DS (my third) was measuring big - his head and stomach were measuring 39w when I was 34w - and I was tested again for GD. That came back as a yes so I was induced at 38w. I did end up with an EMCS but that wasn’t due to his size. He was 8lb 7oz - only an ounce more than DD1 but she was born at 40+5 instead of 38+2.

MixedCouple2 · 11/07/2024 02:07

My BFF had large babies no GD. She is 5'1 and petite!!! She had 4 home births. Babies were over 9lbs - 11lbs. As long as you mobilise and move around and birth in the optimal position you can 100% have normal births.

Look up spinning babies.

If your on your back like Drs like then yea you Mary have a harder time. But unless your been diagbosed with a small pelvic outlet then you can have natural births. Not many women actually have "small pelvises" not common. What is tue issue is labour positions.

My midwife attended a home birth where baby 2as measuring average. But was massive and over 10lbs. No issues as Mamas was ay home and mobilized

My daughter was 38 when she had her daughter ( first child) so had extra midwife visits in the third trimester. She kept being told that the baby had not grown much so she was sent for several growth scans. At the scans, they reassured her and said that all was well and at a scan in week 36, said baby was over 8 lbs so she was expecting a big baby and possibly a difficult delivery.

In the end, baby was born four days late weighing 6 lbs 13 oz and she had an easy and short delivery - 12 hours from water breaking and first pains and delivery, with most of it spent at home.

Mind you, she was my second baby and a very quick delivery, I only just made it into the delivery room!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 11/07/2024 06:27

As long as you mobilise and move around and birth in the optimal position you can 100% have normal births.

Whilst I agree that keeping active in labour certainly helps, it will not guarantee 100% that you’ll have a vaginal delivery with no complications. I was most active in labour with my third and he was my only EMCS - I was haemorrhaging and his heart rate plummeted. They called a cat 1 section.

My first two labours were vaginal deliveries with minimal tearing. No interventions or extra help and I did most of my pushing on my back.

Just an update for anybody worried about the same thing in the future, gestational diabetes test came back negative thankfully, just a big baby! x
