Steak.. and pregnancy

I’m not a steak eater! But this baby is making me crave steak soooo bad.. so we’re going out for steak this weekend.
i just wanted to understand how I would ask for it to be cooked?
when I have lamb or duck I used to have medium-rare.
I don’t particularly want well done steak (a crime?? lol) but my safety and babies wellbeing is way more important.

please and thank you!

NHS says you should only eat well-cooked meat in pregnancy due to the possible risk of toxoplasmosis.

Well I was having medium rare (pink inside) steak at least once a week/two weeks up until 7/8 months when I found out apparently you're not meant to have it pink! The midwife had told me to eat a lot of red meat as id had a big bleed and needed to get my iron up and she never mentioned not having it pink. But we were totally fine, and tbh I still have it a bit pink in the middle so probably medium well.
A friend of mine was actually refused a medium rare steak at a restaurant and the chef said he would only do it for her well done.
According to guidelines it should be well done, no pink meat, but it's up to you how closely you want to stick to it. I'd say it's minimal risk having it a bit pink though, so depends on your own anxieties around it I guess!

Toxoplasmosis cysts die at 60 degrees celsius, that's technically a "medium" steak. Provided that steak is cooked to the temperature (actually measured inside the steak), and not "to the touch" or "color".

Personally I would order well done just to be on the safe side or at least medium well.

meganna · 10/07/2024 12:15

I used to order medium well and suffered no ill effects.

I ate medium all through pregnancy. I had to send a couple back in France that were still cold in the middle...

I've been asking for red meat to be cooked medium-well throughout my pregnancy when I have it in restaurants (and a good restaurant should be able to cook a steak to be a bit more well done without ruining it!). At home we have a sous vide and a meat thermometer so we cook steak to 63 degrees internal temperature for me and then make sure it's well-seared on the outside.

Have you heard of anyone actually having toxoplasmosis. Personally I'd eat it how i like it. Otherwise what's the point 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had a lot of steam when pregnant but always well done i wouldn't touch it if it wasn't
