Third hand smoke

Hi all

I am 4wks+1 after nearly 3 years of infertility. This is our first IUI attempt and as I'm sure a lot of new mums, wanting to look after myself.

My dad and siblings live in a house that hasn't been renovated since the 80s (maybe longer) and have had very heavy smokers living in it. It also has mould on the walls. Every time I go in there I have to wash my hair at home because I stink of smoke.

AIBU to not visit their house while I'm pregnant/when the baby is born because of the risks of 3rd hand smoke?

They don't smoke in the house while I'm there but everything is covered in it, they smoke in every room.

It's probably no less risky than the pollution you'd inhale just by being outside near roads. But if it makes you uncomfortable, don't go there. I've been very adverse and sensitive to cigarette smoke during this pregnancy.

I think secondhand is when someone is smoking near you and you inhale the smoke they exhale, like in pubs back in the day or when my dad smoked with me in the car. This is just smoke and chemicals in the environment I.e on handles, soft furnishings(sofas etc), on the walls & doors.

Ooh yeah, I wouldn't go there personally. The risk is probably minimal but my morning sickness wouldn't have allowed it anyway. I have some friends who enjoy a cigarette after a drink and they're not allowed in my house if they've been smoking.

I hope this makes you feel better OP because it’s understandable your worrying so hopefully this will give you some reassurance -

My parents both smoked throughout my mams pregnancy 🙄 shocking even then. They continued to smoke during the 19 years I lived with them -
the harsh ones and my mam could do 40 in one day. No windows were to be open and they both smoked in the car and again no windows were allowed open….😧

The walls were yellow and the house stank! Anyway, having said that, I’m early 40’s and never had a chest infection or antibiotics for one. I rarely get colds and never flu and I don’t have asthma or any breathing difficulties. I often wonder how that can be…. So I wouldn’t worry as a pp is right, the pollution from car fumes etc are likely to have more of an impact.

Good luck with your pregnancy OP x
