Hyperemesis linked to low milk supply?

Just wanted to run a quick poll.

Did you have hyperemesis - or sickness way past the 'norm' - then have a low milk supply once baby was born?

Or were you flowing and plentiful?

Only asking, as I recently mentioned to two others who suffered during their pregnancies, then both had low milk supplies and skinny babies (as I did).

Anyone else?

Hey booboobedoo

I suffered from Hyperemesis up until 31 weeks with DS, he was 8lbs when born, no probs at all with milk supply and bf for 18 months.

I have read somewhere (but typically can't remember where) that if anything, babies born to hyperemetic women are a tad heavier than average- one of the reasons we feel so shit is that they are so good at getting everything they need from us. Little blighters!

GOod luck, how far along are you?

NorthernLurker · 10/04/2008 16:31

Threw up right the way through all three pregnancies and the b/fed with no supply issues at all.

SugaryBits · 10/04/2008 16:32

I had hyperemesis with ds1 and had no problems with milk supply, infact I donated to hospital milk bank as I had so much I didn't know what to do with it all!

Not my experience.

Had HG badly in both pgs (hospitalised for rehydration both times, took ant-emetics until the day I gave birth both times). Milk supply great.

2 dds, birth weights 7lb13 and 9lbs at birth.

A lovely midwife said to me when I was admitted at 9wks pg and fretting about dd1s health "Starving women in Africa give birth to completely healthy 8lb babies."

Booboobedoo · 10/04/2008 16:35

He's one!

Trying to work out whether I can face going through it again atm...

DS was 6lb 2oz, which was small but fine, but I really didn't have very much milk at all. He was like a different baby once I started mix-feeding him at four months (which I did after my supply drying up, demand-feeding to get it back, then mastitis).

Two friends of mine had a similar experience, and my Grandmother had what sounded like HG whilst PG with my Mum, then was told 'this baby is not thriving' and told to give bottles.

Yes, hyperemesis til 30 weeks with dd1, then had to formula feed from 2 weeks as dd went down to 5 1/2 lb from 6 lb 12.

Sickness until 26 weeks with dd2, was given domperidrone tabs to increase milk supply, most I ever expressed was 4mls , formula fed from 12 days.

It makes me so mad when I see threads "Is formula feeding your baby just laziness?" or such. No it's not always the case, some people would dearly love to breast feed, but when your baby is being weighed twice daily by the health visitor, and the baby has awful dry cracked lips as she is so dehydrated, then there is no alternative but to formula feed.

I would be really interested to see if there is some link between hyperemesis and poor milk supply.

Booboobedoo · 10/04/2008 16:37

No-one else so far then!

Glad to hear it.

sorry to change the averages, but I had similar problems to you booboobedoo.

Hyperemesis gravida, hospitalisation for iron infusions, fluids etc in both pregnancies.

Both born an ok weight - DD 7lbs DS 7lbs 6oz.

DD fed for 16 months but was skinny and I never had enough milk.

DS my milk never came in, when he'd lost over a lb in weight in first 10 days I was advised to top up with forula. Given that my milk had still not come in and I had a busy 3 year old to look after too I thought, sod this I can't find time to bfeed and bottle so I'll just bottle. Again, though he was a skinny baby, and still is skinny at almost 2.

So I'm thinking the skinnyness is due to their natural build( which clearly they must get from DH not me) rather than the feeding method!

3littlefrogs · 10/04/2008 16:41

I had hyperemesis with all pregnancies but could have lactated for England...........I think it has much more to do with how well nourished and hydrated you are while breast feeding, and whether you have enough support, and are able to feed on demand.

Minkus · 10/04/2008 16:46

Ar lol Booboobedoo sorry thought you meant you were pregnant now! I think you are very sensible to weigh up the pro's and cons of getting pregnant again. I didn't and went into this one blindly thinking "oh it will be fine, we managed last time round" without thinking of the effect it would have on ds and the increased burden dh would have to bear because of ds, if that makes sense. I had forgotten a bit of the reality I think (dh wasn't he was terrified poor lamb but I did a lalalala fingers in ears sort of thing)

Would have loved to go on and have more children after this one but the sickness was worse this time round (the unfairness!) and there is sadly no way I can put myself/my family through this again.

Having said all that I would have wanted this second baby even if I they told me before conceiving that I would have to live in isolation in an oxygen tent sticking pins in my own eyes for 9 months! Once broodiness kicked in there really wasn't a huge amount I could do...

Booboobedoo · 10/04/2008 16:46

3littlefrogs: I ate for England while breastfeeding, drank loads of water, had loads of wonderful support & always fed on demand.

I just didn't have much milk.

3littlefrogs, I had fantastic support from my husband h/v and Mum in both cases.I was having all my meals cooked for me , good organic food, cooked from scratch, DH would be bringing drinks whilst I sat for upto 4 hours at a time "demand feeding".

This had no effect on my milk supply.

Booboobedoo · 10/04/2008 16:50

Minkus: so sorry to hear you had a rotten time, but congratulations on your baby!

I think I've blocked a lot of it out, tbh. But what i do remember is bad.

Can't bear the thought of not being able to hug DS in case I throw up. Eugh.

Anyway, so far the score is 5-3 in favour of the major-lactators! (Should that be an 'o' or an 'e'?).

Off to feed DS (chicken and rice - not milk), but will check back later...

I had hyperemesis twice but milk supply in both cases was fine.

pinkyminky · 10/04/2008 17:04

I'm just embarking on number 3, having had HG for 2 previous pregnancies, with ptyalism. I'm nearly 12 weeks now and just been a bit sick and nauseous, no HG!
Fed both my babies fine, had loads of milk-but then my appetite did come back straight away with biRTH

Minkus · 10/04/2008 19:41

AH pinkyminky I had ptyalism first time round too but avoided it this time. Sounds like you have missed the hg as well! Well done, were your first two babies both boys/girls? Wonder whether this one is the other if so.

Nyeh · 10/04/2008 19:43

Gushing milk, head down toilet and medicated for 90% of pregnancy.

Very healthy looking & weight baby

pinkyminky · 10/04/2008 19:57

Hi Minkus- no I haver one of each- more reason why everyone thinks I'm mad to have another!
