No. It's just too small!

PollyParanoia · 10/04/2008 14:20

It can be done as a friend of mine who's a doctor had the sonographer tell her at the 12 scan. As they both worked in the same hospital they weren't so worried about being sued etc because obv it's got more margin for error at that stage.
ps they said a boy and it was a boy. Of course, they might have just been guessing...

it can be done but with alot larger margin of error as those bits r only just starting to develop and very small.

with amnios and other tests that involve take samples from the baby they can tell 99.9% by looking at the chromosones xx for a girl and xy for a boy.
altho in very rare cases an xy can develop into a girl if no testosterone is produced

SlightlyMadSweet · 10/04/2008 14:37

It can be done, as hatrick says it is based on teh angle of the tubercule rather than the presence or absense of "bits".

Not sure that many NHS scans would do it at 12wk TBH given the margin for error.

I found out with ds2 at we weeks, it can be done. Was a privare scan.

JodieG1 · 10/04/2008 14:38

12 weeks even lol.

JodieG1 · 10/04/2008 14:39

Should say private, aforementioned ds2 helping me type lol.

goingfor3 · 10/04/2008 14:39

I was told I was having a girl at 20 weeks and then at 30 weeks was told it was a boy, i will find out who was right in 7 weeks! At 12 weeks there is an even greater chance of getting it wrong.

scroll down to the box labelled "angle fo the Dangle"

At the Fetal Medicine Centre (where the equipment is state-of-the-art), they told me they were 90% certain of the gender based on a 12-13 week scan. Confirmed it two days later with preliminary CVS results.

MissPaulaYates · 10/04/2008 17:21

but was it a boy anagram? i always think they are keener to give a high %

thelittlestbadger · 10/04/2008 17:26

I went to the Fetal Medicine Centre and was told that the baby was more likely to be a girl and the sonographer was pretty positive but said it was still very small and would have to confirm at 20 weeks. It can be done, but don't start buying nursery stuff based on it!

gem1981 · 10/04/2008 20:07

Fetal Medicine centre told me i was having a girl at a nuchal scan - i had a boy !!!

MissPaulaYates · 10/04/2008 20:10

Wow gem - had you asked again or taken it as read?

at my nuchal the sonographer just said 'do you want to know what it is' i said no but assume form her confidence a garçon

Weegle · 10/04/2008 20:13

I was told DS at private 12 week nuchal. Correct! The sonographer said she was in no doubt.

Anagram · 10/04/2008 21:36

MisPaulaYates, yes, you are right, the FMC sonographer informed us (correctly) during the nuchal scan that it was a boy. Dh was hoping for a girl, told him so.

BigBadMouse · 10/04/2008 21:47

Yes, boy. NHS scan. I didn't ask but the sonographer mentioned it after the scan. It was very obvious tbh - certainly something there that wasn't there with my DDs scans but I still didn't believe her or myself at the time.

slinkiemalinki · 10/04/2008 21:50

Yes. My doctor has said we are having a boy.(He is an NHS consultant though we are seeing him privately.) Having done the nuchal test, it was the first question he asked - did we want to know?He explained the "angle of the dangle" and was in no doubt. I found the brilliant link posted above by SlightlyMad not long after. You will see that stats at 12 weeks are excellent (earlier much less so). It is slightly easier to see a boy than a girl. If you look at www.in-gender.com there is a whole forum dedicated to "nub shots" and some real experts on there!

MissPaulaYates · 11/04/2008 21:41

hmm so it all seems to be boys spotted early

Jojay · 11/04/2008 22:17

Wow! Thanks everyone - so it can be done!!

I've got my scan on Monday week, and I'm soooooo tempted to ask!

I'd be very happy with a boy or a girl ( have DS already) but I just want to KNOW!!!

BigBadMouse · 11/04/2008 22:18

Well yes but...my DH has said with both our DDs 'Oh it must be a girl, she has her mouth open' - Damn him, he was right [sngry].

I did notice DS had his mouth firmly closed throughout the 12 week scan but at the 20 week scan he had he hand on his willy for the entire duration

BigBadMouse · 11/04/2008 22:19

Oops X post..btw I have no idea what [sngry] is .
