Hello,
What supplements or methods do you use to enhance egg quality at the age of 35?

You can't do anything can you?

Perhaps supplements might help, although I'm not sure which ones. I'm just wondering if anyone has had luck using supplements while TTC and then becoming pregnant.

The quality of your eggs was determined before you even exited your mother's womb.

You have a set number of eggs but one will mature each month and there must be things that affect that process so I don't think its necessarily correct that there's nothing you can do.

I took CoQ10 and B vitamins (pregnacare preconception). I've seen people recommend to read "it starts with an egg" to learn more.

I had 4 failed IVF due to poor quality - I took 6 months off and read it starts with the egg. I took the CoQ10 (amongst others I can't remember), I cut out all plastics - or as much as I realistically could do. My next round of IVF was transformed and I now have 5 year old twins with 5 blastocysts in the freezer.

Oh and I was 39 when I had my twins

I’m 35 and didn’t bother with any supplements , fell pregnant first attempt

KentishDreamer30 · 27/06/2024 16:57

Thanks! I'm taking Pregnacare conception ( started 3 months ago) but haven't tried CoQ10 yet. It's been over a year TTC. I'll give CoQ10 a shot since my GP doesn't seem too interested.

I have very low ovarian reserve and was mid-thirties when I started trying to get pregnant. While going through 3 failed rounds of IVF, I started to take ubiquinol (a more easily absorbed type of coq10) which my doctor said could have some incremental benefits (not fully proven) and wouldn’t be harmful. On my third round I also took smallish doses of testosterone on recommendation of my doctor (this is not a simple supplement and should only be done if recommended for your circumstances!). I had a good quality blastocyst to transfer each time (two in one round) - which for my circumstances was far from guaranteed- but none of them took.

Not sure if the supplements had any effect or not, but I did continue with ubiquinol and I fell pregnant naturally shortly after my last failed cycle at 39 (due in 10 days!). Could have helped in some way but will never really know. I’d probably have a fertility MOT/blood tests etc to see what your individual circumstances are before going too far down the rabbit hole of supplements and treatments.

The book It Starts With An Egg is a good place to start understanding possible routes but I would say to try to remain healthily sceptical of what works for you and realistic about what you can do - as easy to drive yourself barmy worrying about doing every little thing when luck and genetics are also massive factors that aren’t in our control. It is also a US book and therefore some cultural and medical differences in approach.

Erm no, where on earth are you getting this information? Please think before posting bollocks.

A 40 year old, overweight, heavy drinking smoker will statistically have worse quality eggs than a healthy 25 year old.

OP, there’s some evidence that CoQ10 and omega 3 DHA can help egg quality, as mentioned in “it starts with the egg”. The other usual advice about healthy diet, moderate exercise etc. all still applies. It’s not an iron clad guarantee but it can definitely help boost your natural quality.

Of course, there is a significant genetic element, but lifestyle factors do also play a role.

Partner and I both took proceive 3 months before we starter trying and got pregnant first try. They're very reasonably priced.

caffelattetogo · 27/06/2024 19:10

I took CoQ10 and DHEA, as well as some of the supplements listed in It Starts With The Egg, and accupuncture. I don't know what worked and what didn't, but my IVF was successful, despite poor odds.

valaston · 27/06/2024 19:21

I went through ivf and when i asked about what to do in the lead up to maximise our chances, my specialist said the strongest evidence is that good (mediterranean style) diet and steady exercise will help, and ubinoquil and fish oil can't hurt. Got several good embryos and pregnant on first attempt, but of course don't know how much of it was just the luck of that one cycle!
