Anomally scan shows baby is 6 days ahead in total - is that normal??

Hi Girls,

I had my anomaly scan on Monday and the obstetrician said that all measurements appear normal, but they respond to 21 weeks + 6 days old baby and my one was 21weeks + 0 days gestational age. For example the weight of the baby was 428 grams. Also all the measurements were above 50% on the centile line and the obstetrician said that this is not very standard. He said that I should go for another scan in a month's time to check the growth of the foetus. I couldn't find any information what would that mean if the baby appears 6 days bigger than it should be and I am a bit confused at the moment. I am absolutely sure of the date of my last period. Does anyone had similar results and what would it mean that my baby appears too big for its age?

i really don;t think you should worry too much, scanning is not an exact science. some babies measure bigger, some measures smaller, some are avereage. if your baby's measurements are all in proportion, then it really does not mean anything to be concerned about IMO.

baby might be bigger than average, but some babies will always be bigger than average.

growth scans do have a margin for error so 6 days is not really a huge difference,

My DB2 is 5 days "ahead" after the dating/nuchal scan. My only concern is that they won't believe my dates (which I know are right) and try to induce me before my body is ready.
My DD1 was always big for dates too (over the course of 4 scans), and no-one batted an eyelid. There was some concern about delivering her, as she was predicted to be over 9lb, but as it was she was just over 8lb, and if she'd faced the right way, she would have been born no problem (but that's another story!). If it were me I wouldn't worry too much.

I wouldn't worry, my baby's measurements were all different - femur length quite short but tummy circumference big.

There is a lot of room for error and 6 days is not a lot. My first ever scan at 12 weeks with ds1 put me out by 12 days...nothing wrong, just different sizes and you may have ovulated early or something.

No panic

Thank you for the replies girls!
I should stop worry that much. Sometimes doctors don't know how we accept every word they say and I end up worrying about so many silly things.
Thanks again!

Dear all,

I have an interesting one to add to this discussion. I had an IVF conception so we know definately when conception took place. My dating scan has always put me a week ahead. No-one can blame my dates being out and I am not sure if actual conception, 12th September or dating scan are more acurate. This will come into play because I have to be induced owing to a deep vein thrombosis. I have always counted the dating scan as my due date has been calculated from this. I guess there is variation in foetal development.

Love NS XXXX

My baby is measuring over a week bigger than he should be. I have to go for a scan nearer the birth to see what size he is going to be. My hospital seem to think its fairly common.

Sketchi · 10/04/2008 10:25

My scan showed the same thing. Just stick to what you thought in the first place, as they won't change the date as it's not more than a week apart.

Just expect the baby a bit earlier, be prepared.

My DS was measured at 7 days older than he was at 12 weeks and then two weeks older than he was at 20 weeks. (I knew my dates were right.) He was a porker though - 8 lbs 10oz at exactly 37 weeks.

I wouldn't worry. As others have said, babies come in all shapes and sizes.

Ds measured a week ahead all the way through the pg, was born at 39+5 weighing 7lb7.

I've experienced similar - all measurements above the 50th centile but I wasn't lead to believe that this was in any way problematic.

Have I got this wrong but doesn't the 50th centile mean that half of all babies will be below this and half above? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. So, not sure why you consultant would be concerned?

My DS was above the 50th centile on all measurements and he's got exactly the same relative proportions now, 4 years on! He wasn't a whopper - 8lb 3oz. I'm pg with DD and she has the same relative proportions too - really quite freaky when I compare both anomally scans. I got the 'ooo, you've got a big baby' line too.

We have to have IVF/ICSI so there is no way my dates can be moved but I'm sure if this was a natural conception they would want to bring EDD forward.
