Hi there I'm 7 weeks pregnant and have a midwife Appointment coming up. What kind of questions do they ask and what do you do at the appointment? This will be my second pregnancy but last pregnancy ended in MC and never got this far so this is new to me.

Little bit worried as only thing that I think could affect anything is previous MH history in my teen years when I was about 15 I was admitted to hospital for a s*ide attempt/OD and have been fine mentally ever since/no struggles or anything and doing well in myself. No other problems to worry about such as smoking/drug use or any previous convictions or anything like that..just worried about the MH really.

Anyone who could guide me or knows if they look into this?
Many thanks

They don't "look into" your mental health history as far as I'm aware. It would benefit you just to be honest about it as you have been here but you can choose not to openly disclose it. It isn't used against you. And it isn't something to worry about.
It isn't going to 'affect' anything. The booking appointment is to work out what support or care you might need and to check historical health of you and the father of the baby and both families (e.g. have you had chicken pox, is there any history of pre term labour in the family, any diabetes in the family etc etc). It's also okay not to know.

At my booking appointment I told my midwife I recently suffered with depression and anxiety and when on progesterone a few years ago felt quite suicidal but currently felt well and didn't need any support. They've checked in with me at every appointment about MH which I think they do regardless. I think I'm more likely to experience post natal depression as a result of my history so I'd rather they knew in case I spiral and don't realise.

I hope it goes well 😊

Hi OP, firstly congratulations! I'm sorry you're worrying about this. It would be normal for your midwife to ask questions about any MH history you might have and to explore how your MH is at present. This is purely to ensure that you have any supports you may need in pregnancy. In my experience, this will be lead by you. As in they would guide you as to what supports are available, and you would request if you wanted or needed any MH referral for additional support. Your history will be documented in your notes and I'm sure your midwife will enquire as the pregnancy goes on as to how you're doing but nothing additional. Glad to hear you're very well at the moment and long may that continue for you😊 Hope you're not too worried about it

Your booking in appointment and any appointments thereafter are not an investigation into you. Your midwifes job and anyone who provides care to you or baby both antenatally or postnatally is to provide care and support which is non judgemental and takes into account your wants, wishes and needs. Like PP mentioned its important to discuss your physical and mental health history. You are in a better place now but midwife can make you aware of resources ect that may be beneficial. Pregnancy and once baby is here is a huge milestone in your life and can bring up all kinds of emotions so take care of yourself.

Ps congratulations and please don't worry about discussing anything with the MW xx
