Wythenshawe or Macclesfield hospital?

Hi all - I am newly pregnant and just trying to navigate all the decisions that come with that! I have been asked to choose what hospital to give birth in and don’t know where to start.

Does anyone have recent experience of giving birth either in Wythenshawe hospital (think the labour ward there is called St Mary’s) or Macclesfield hospital?

Any thoughts or experiences much appreciated!

Congratulations
I had mine at st Mary's, that's the central Manchester hospital.
My friend had hers at wythenshawe and said the facilities were excellent including birthing pools in several suites.

I found Wythenshawe brilliant when I gave birth there. I had a suite with a birthing pool and found it a really positive experience, the midwives were all amazing too.

Macc has just reopened it maternity wing and it's had very positive feedback

A family members birth didn't quite go to plan and she was moved to Wythenshawe as they have specialists within the hospital for different areas. Mum and baby were and are both fine.
My dad also saw a specialist at Wythenshawe for an obviously unrelated type of treatment. I've only ever heard good things but can't comment on Macclesfield

Congrats! Would be really interested to know with which hosp you choose as I’ve just found out I’m pregnant (4weeks) and my GP has asked me to make a choice between these two hospitals. They said Macclesfield is newer and fresher but Wythenshawe is award winning. Either way, good luck and perhaps see you there as it sounds like we’ll probably be due around the same time!

Ah congrats to you too @TheArtfulPombear! I am currently leaning towards Wythenshawe just from hearing anecdotally from a few people who have given birth there but yet to decide - need to do a bit more research!

I’m due in 4 weeks and I’ve decided to go to Wythenshawe. I originally signed up to St Mary’s on Oxford Road and had all my appointments there but after reading lots and learning about best birthing environment for no risk pregnancies, Wythenshawe has it all! You can also see their birthing centre on YouTube and register for a tour on eventbrite (they do recommend to book it a bit later in your pregnancy though and there is a fairly high demand too)

Slightly different but I had the Wythenshawe homebirth team for all my pregnancies and they were all lovely.

Hello! Can I ask where you choose in the end? I’ve just found out I’m expecting and we are considering Macclesfield. Warrington is another option and I think their Care Quality Commission report was slightly better than Macc.

Hi SRH! Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I chose Wythenshawe in the end, but unfortunately had a miscarriage at around 9 weeks. From what I saw from the booking app and the aftercare when the miscarriage happened, all the staff are great and very lovely!

Oh no so sorry to hear this! This is my first pregnancy as far as I’m aware. I’m just coming up on 5 weeks but I have no idea what to expect etc. I’m so nervous and keep expecting the worst to happen. I self-referred to Macclesfield last night and they phoned me today so say it looked like I was slightly out of the area for them. We’re bang smack in the middle of 3 hospitals, all of which are 14-16 miles from our home address. Can Macclesfield decline to provide me with care?

My friend had a baby at Macclesfield recently and said it was great. Wythenshawe also has a really good reputation but I have heard a couple of negatives recently. I had mine at stepping hill and it was terrible so I would suggest avoid that!

Ah how strange, I didn’t think they could decline you like this - has anything happened since? What have you ended up doing?

Thanks to everyone for the replies - just to add for anyone else considering Wythenshawe, someone I know has just had a caesarean there and overall the care has been great
