How much longer can I be in this pain for?! 2cm dilated

39 weeks pregnant today, had excruciating back pain, pressure in bum and contractions last night from about 5pm to 1am. Rang triage who advised me to go in for a check up. Im 2cm dilated and cervix is 1cm long so not in active labour. Was advised to go home and try and get some rest.

I was relatively pain free apart from some pressure feeling but after around midday the pain is becoming unbearable again, it’s excruciating to go to the toilet and it’s making me not want to go. How much longer can I be in this much pain for before being in active labour?!

I started on the Friday and had my dd on Monday morning. I was 42 weeks .
I hope it speeds up for you. Walking round and bouncing on a birth ball if you can .Are good ways to speed things up

Unfortunately I was in "latent" back to back labour for 5 days without dilating. On off contractions but they were agony, it was horrendous.

Stardust127 · 23/06/2024 18:20

I can’t offer any advice unfortunately but really sympathise with how you feel as I’m 37 weeks and feel more or less exactly the same. I went into maternity fetal assessment unit yesterday who said I’m in early labour and could be a few weeks until active labour! Don’t think that will be the case for you though hopefully as you’re 2 weeks ahead of me. Wishing you the best of luck x

BridetoBee · 23/06/2024 18:22

I’d ask them to check for signs of a uti. I had one when I gave birth to DS and it was agony, worse than the labour pain!

glasshalffull0 · 23/06/2024 18:30

@Pliyo my baby is back to back too the pain is unbearable isn’t it. Did anything help in the end? Just had a mental breakdown to my partner because I just feel like I can’t take it anymore

I never dilated beyond 2cm. Had contractions with no break between them. Thankfully had a c section eventually!

readyforroundthree · 23/06/2024 18:34

@glasshalffull0 I really feel for you. My fist baby was back to back and it was honestly torture. I put up with it for 48 hours with zero sleep and begged to be seen but I was hysterical on the phone to them. Fingers crossed it speeds up for you.

Starlight7080 · 23/06/2024 18:34

I remember screaming into a pillow lots . And baths but not too hot .

glasshalffull0 · 23/06/2024 18:37

@readyforroundthree did they do anything for you? It’s going to be day 3 tomorrow and I feel the same, I’m really reaching the end of what I can take

My baby was back to back too - I'd had 30 hours of contractions every 5 mins, they were soooo painful and they checked me and I was still only 2cm dilated.

Got sent back home - then 6 hours later he was born!

readyforroundthree · 23/06/2024 18:42

@glasshalffull0 I actually ended up taking co-codamol the whole time I was at home along with a permanent hot water bottle on my back as the pain was constant. When I arrived at the hospital I was 3cm dilated but my waters hadn't yet fully gone so they had to break them. Oncr they did that I went to 6cm within an hour but unfortunately took me another 13 hours to get to 9cm and by that time baby had enough (as had I) and I had an EMCS. I immediately requested an epidural when I got there and the pain went immediately it was wonderful. When did they last check how many cm you are?

TaupeRobin · 23/06/2024 18:43

2 labours. 7 years in between. The second was back to back. God the constant contractions with no break and the pain 😭 I had an epidural in the end. I was in as an induction as I was 42 weeks and no movement. I don’t know what I would have done without that epidural. My first labour was painful but I needed nothing other than gas and air. With the back to back it was just the relentlessness of it.
if you’re in the that much pain I’d beg to be seen again.

AtrociousCircumstance · 23/06/2024 18:45

Back to back - I think you should go back into the ward. Demand some pain relief and support.

Nat6999 · 23/06/2024 18:45

Get on your hands & knees, it takes the pressure off your back & may get baby to turn.

glasshalffull0 · 23/06/2024 18:46

@readyforroundthree the last time I was checked was last night, the midwife just said labour at home and come in when contractions are regularly 3ish minutes apart. I didn’t really make a big deal of the pain because I assumed (naively) that things might have progressed more today

haha I had a vision that I’d have a lovely hypnobirthing, water birth but now I’d take anything that will take this pain away in a heart beat!

@glasshalffull0 my contractions were never regular, even when I got upto 9cm. You will find that's common for back to back labours, please phone them and ask to be seen again. It's not the Middle Ages, you shouldn't be left like this, 3 days of being in constant pain with probably no sleep is not ok.

PurBal · 23/06/2024 18:50

If you’re in excruciating pain then call triage. The regular contractions, 10cm dilated thing is textbook presentation. I’ve had two babies and not had regular contractions. With my second my body started pushing at only 8cm and he was out 14 minutes later.

TeaPleaseX · 23/06/2024 23:07

Call them back up. All my labours have been back labour. I didn't get pain in the front really. I've always gone from 6-10 in about 8 minutes as well which is quite scary. I seem to take a whilst to build up to 6 then I turn demented and start spiralling and then start pushing.
Please go and get checked again x

stripey1 · 23/06/2024 23:34

I was a bit like this, back to back, contractions started day 1 morning and continued, birth was day 3 late afternoon with intervention. After the second visit to triage I refused to go home, saying I would keep neighbours awake screaming. Got crap care on antenatal though but at least there was cocodamol. Tens machine was the most useful thing. I also recommend not trying to hold it together emotionally, as they seem to judge your pain on how unhinged you appear. And would demand they check your progression at least once or twice a day. Good luck.

readyforroundthree · 24/06/2024 08:00

@glasshalffull0 how are you this morning? I hope things have progressed for you.
