Hey has everyone who is pregnant at 40 or over been advised to take low dose aspirin? Is everyone following this advice. I am but also feel a bit unsure about it 🤔

I took it through both pregnancies. What concerns you?

Maty444 · 22/06/2024 21:20

The guidance varies by trust, some trusts advice it if over 40 and first pregnancy, others just on basis of being over 40

jolenethea · 22/06/2024 21:21

Under 40 but I took it as advised by my consultant, due to my previous baby being considered to have low birth weight

jolenethea · 22/06/2024 21:22

Or possibly my high blood pressure - I can't remember which one!

ProjectKettle · 22/06/2024 21:27

Im late 30s but i had to take it in my first pregnancy as i was high risk for preeclampsia. I had a small baby (5lbs 12oz), high BP and no preeclampsia. For DD2, despite being 3 years older and heavier, i was told that i didnt meet the criteria for taking it so i didnt. I did however go on to develop preeclampsia this time. I really wish i had just taken it anyway.

It is now advised in national guidance, relating to high blood pressure and a number of other of risks noted in the “Saving Babies Lives” document.
Low dose aspirin in pregnancy is not uncommon now.
Please speak to your midwife or obstetrician if you have concerns- I am sure they will be able to reassure you.

I’m 39 and currently 36+3 weeks pregnant and been taking 150mg of aspirin daily since 12 weeks. I’ve also been on blood thinning injections daily for the last 3 weeks

Webs22 · 22/06/2024 21:47

Thanks so much for all the replies ❤
I think I was just worried because you're advised against taking most things so wondered why this was okay but I can see from all your responses that the benefits must far out way any risks so feel much better now. Thank you x

I took it with both of my pregnancies. Was fine

LegoBear84 · 22/06/2024 22:16

Yep! Turned 40 in February, fell pregnant in March. Am on 150mg daily of aspirin, I was quite cautious about taking it as I have Crohn's and NSAIDs are not to be taken but my gastro consultant said it's a very low dose and was happy for me to continue as advised.

Kiwi23 · 23/06/2024 09:05

I’m only 30 but I got given it to help prevent preeclampsia had to take from 12 weeks three times a day

Xur · 23/06/2024 15:56

I am 34, it’s my first and I have Low Papp-A. Been taking it since 13 W and I’m all fine

Dyra · 23/06/2024 21:03

Took aspirin in both my pregnancies as I was at risk of developing pre-eclampsia and because I'd had pre-eclampsia in a previous pregnancy respectively. Supposedly it improves blood flow in the placenta, making it more effective and reducing the risk of small baby and pre-eclampsia.

It's very common to be taking it nowadays, and my midwife in my second pregnancy believes that one day in the future, everyone will be recommended to take it akin to folic acid.

Nou83 · 15/11/2024 11:44

I’ve been advised to take 100mg aspirin a day, I’m currently 7 weeks pregnant. This is due to having a miscarriage previously at 10 weeks that my consultant is sure was caused by a clot stopping the blood flow to the placenta.
so the aspirin is to prevent this from happening but can increase risk of miscarriage through bleeding.
does anyone else have experience with this & of so what advice were you given by you consultant?

sel2223 · 15/11/2024 16:22

41 here (almost 42) and been on low dose aspirin since 6 weeks on the advice of my consultant.

I'm 21 weeks tomorrow and all going well.

Sorry - just realised this is an old thread

Westofeasttoday · 15/11/2024 16:26

Yes. Apparently our blood can get a bit thicker as we get older and it helps blood flow between mum and fetus (obstetrics doctor told me). It got me preggers and I took it for first trimester.

They arent steering you wrong. Why are you worried about doctors advice?

Nou83 · 15/11/2024 19:36

@Westofeasttoday im in France & it seems it’s not very common practice here so when the consultant explained it to me he made it sound like it was a very risky thing to do. But in order to prevent a MC like before it was recommended. He also went on to say that I shouldn’t do anything, stay home, not go out & even not go to work. So I just felt a bit terrified by this but having heard lots of other experiences from other mums on here on another thread it seems it’s very common in uk to give aspirin during pregnancy & that my consultant is just being very cautious with his advice. Thanks 🙏🏼
