abruption - likely to happen again?

Amongst other problems I had placental abruption in my last pregnancy. I am now starting to weigh my options for delivery in this pregnancy but my mw wouldn't give me a straight answer when I asked if it was likely that an abruption could happen again? Does anyone know if it's high risk of happening again?

I'll discuss it with my consultant as well but I'm not seeing her until I'm 28 weeks so two months until then...

I was told that there is a risk of repeat - about 17.5%. So I had an elective and really quite early caesarian with my second child because I didn't want to spend the last few weeks of pregancy dreading another abruption and the loss of a full term baby. (We were incredibly lucky the first time - the abruption happened at the hospital during a routine appt; I was in the theatre in minutes for an emergency caesar.)

Anyway, all was fine second time round.

Thanks Mumsfruitandnut. I started bleeding at home when my waters broke and was told it was a miracle that my daughter survived. I really would love a vbac, but constantly worrying about the same thing happening again wouldn't be good.

I didnt have a abruption but had placental failure and it resulted in two tiny babies and dangerous births (they put the first down to Pre Eclampcia) and was lucky both my gir,s arew here.
Could you not ask to see youre consultant earlier? I saw mine every 2 weeks from 8 weeks the second time round.

Hi, I had a placental abruption with my 2nd dd, but I didn't know it was straight away cos my only symptom was that i was hysterical. My hubby took me to maternity in the middle of the night and i just could not stop laughing - i think i had gone past my pain threshold and was hysterically laughing. I didn't have any bleeding because the abruption was behind the placenta and the blood was just backing up and making my womb contract - hence the hysterics. They did a scan and a c section within minutes. Baby was 6 weeks early and in scbu for 2 weeks and no probs now. (shes 7) BUT I am 9 weeks pregnant again and was told previously that i would have to have c section at 34 weeks again incase the same thing happens. i am seeing a consultant in the next week or so , so will let u know what they say.

I had PA with my first. Was pretty much forced into an 'elective' CS with my second, he had absolutely no issues and was born well at 39weeks.

Am pregnant 3rd time round and have had extra monitoring due to the abruption (better hospital, actually checks things rather than just scares you).

I am currently 40 weeks (due today!) and although I had abnormal blood flow to my placenta I am sitting around waiting to go into labour with my (still very healthy) baby by VBA2C.

It isn't necessarily going to happen again, and there is nothing to suggest you shouldn't have a normal full-term healthy pregnancy and labour this time round, a good consultant and their team will just want to do regular check-ups for placental function as any placental issue can mean higher risk for IUGR or Pre-Eclampsia.

Good Luck.
