pregnancy continues after bleed?

Hi,
We are TTC so I track my ovulation/periods.
Would have been due my period 8th June. No sign of period on 8th June. Negative test on 9th June which then a medium-heavy flow begins (assumed period) lasting 4 days. Bleeding stopped. Had intercourse a day later. 2 days later brown discharge for 3 days, which turnt into pale spotting for a further 2 days. Now we are 9 days since first day of what we thought was my period. Have tested, strong positive! I would be 6 weeks as sex was 23rd May during my fertile window. Assumed possible early loss due to the period-like bleed. Next day, no more spotting and pregnancy symptoms, very tender enlarged breasts, hardened bloatage, sicky feeling. Waited 2 days (now we are 12 days since the period-like bleed) tested again, even stronger positive line, mild cramps and breasts are even more sensitive, still having that sicky freling. A few possibilities and have called EPU (history of miscarraige) waiting a call back. What im seeking is any positive outcomes with a heavy bleed, followed by spotting and pregnancy continued. This mornings home test attached. TIA :)

I had what I thought was my period (just as heavy as normal) followed by a BFP a week or so later and it was ectopic, diagnosed after it was seen on scan after a week or so of blood tests every 48 hours. I'm sorry you are going through this. I am not an expert but suspect your endometrium is thinner than would be expected for a normal pregnancy, no doubt your doctors will be able to give better information.

Thank you for your support!

Im sorry your experienced resulted in an ectopic. If my HCG results on Monday confirm rising, they should investigate further. The sonographer did have a look elsewhere and did suggest all seems clear, would you know if they can see fallopion tubes on a ultrasound? They confirmed my polycystic ovaries on both ovaries so I assume they have given the clear for an ectopic in the ovaries.

Google is my bestfriend, and worst nightmare atm. The thin endometrium does seem too low for an active pregnancy according to my search.

My head is on the pathway to an ectopic, but trying to remain positive until I know more.

Thanks again for your support!

They can sometimes find an ectopic on a scan but it does depend on it being somewhere predictable (eg in the tubes) and big enough to be seen, which isn't always the case. Mine was eventually, but I think my HCG was probably somewhere around 2000 by that point.

The next time I had an ectopic they found it in my tube on my first hospital visit, but that was 2 consultants in a major London teaching hospital using a brand new machine, and it still took them a while.

Theunamedcat · 27/06/2024 21:43

I had this it was awful internal scans (which aggravated the bleeding) blood tests more scans pain bleeding I ended up with chronic thrush the result? He is 15 he was the hardest pregnancy easiest labour though 😑

Never found put why I bled so much and my next pregnancy wasn't so traumatic

Keep the faith it happens sometimes one locum dr told me about a lady who had an enormous bleed they found a heartbeat but were pretty sure the pregnancy was not going to be a success and they introduced to their newborn a few months later so miracles happen

Good evening OP.
I had a very similar experience to yourself. Pul after what i assumed had been a period and rising, darkening tests, but unfortunately after never finding any pregnancy on scan despite HCG levels rising, the free fluid in the pouch of Douglas increased so they took me for exploratory surgery and found a ruptured ectopic which was removed with my right tube.
I hope ur outcome is different.
That was at the end of feb this year and I am now coming up to 9w pregnant again.

Im sorry you had to go through that, such a traumatic experience.

Ectopic is a possibility for myself, but with hope this is not the case.

Update,

After a sleepless night, I did some CB's at 4am

Im not sure how to take this, with the digital being 3+ the leaflet suggests taking this result as 5+ and if this is the case something would have been seen on yesterdays ultrasound.

Surely theres no way I had a complete miscarraige and still testing so strong with strengthening symptoms almost 3 weeks later? If I had miscarried I was only 4 weeks along according to my dates.

Im just so baffled by it all! I know to wait for further blood tests over the weekend, but in the meantime I cant help but think im having an ectopic. Should I contact anyone and raise this to them? Im not showing any symptoms of an ectopic, so should I wait for the blood results?

Yes you should wait for the blood test results. I assume you are under the EPAU? They will follow up and order repeat bloods and scans as needed Any pain, including in your shoulder tip, and you should go straight to A&E.

Yes I assume I am now under EPAU as they have instructed the blood tests. I have to attend later today for another set and will have results Monday, hopefully.

My pregnancy symptoms are developing stronger as I wait. However, I have not experienced severe pelvic/abdominal pain, bleeding or shoulder tip pain.

Its an overwhelming experience!

I had bleeding just like you described. I was pregnant but no baby ever developed (empty sac and eventually D&C at 8 weeks). Wishing the best for you, it's a horrible limbo to be in.

Hi, update for those following

I got a call from EPU with results from my bloods this morning. They are rising but very slowly, they were at 6,000, putting me at high risk of ectopic.

I was asked to go in for a scan a few hours later, which they spent 25 minutes internally scanning not able to locate a pregnancy. They confirmed a very small amount of fluid in my pelvis which they are not concerned about, and what looks like a corpus luteum in my left overy.

I was told with my hcg being so high, they should either see a viable pregnancy, an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarraige, which they could not.

I wss told my case would be referred to a consultant, and to wait for a re-scan. I waited two hours to be pulled in by the consultant who didnt seem concerned and actually suggested my risk of ectopic is low (based on my age, no family history etc). She took a set of bloods and asked me to return in 48hrs to take more bloods, re-scan and see her for a plan. She ruled out a viable pregnancy, so the only explination is an ectopic, or a misscarraige. However is a miscarraige occured this would have been 3+ weeks ago and my hcg would not continue to rise nor would my pregnancy symptoms to this day become stronger.

I have come home no wiser than I was when I woke up this morning.

Has anyone experienced similar? A pregnancy of unknown location, unable to trace this far into pregnancy?

Sorry to hear you don’t have any firm answers. No advice here but don’t want to read and run. Hope you are ok xx

Okayornot · 01/07/2024 16:49

Hello, I'm sorry you did not get better news. It is actually quite common for them not to be able to find an ectopic on a scan, because they can be outside of the reproductive system so tougher to visualise.

As your doctor noted, with HCG of 6000 you would expect to see a pregnancy that was in the uterus. As they can't, it sounds as though they have determined that the pregnancy is ectopic.

Follow up bloods will give them an idea of whether the pregnancy is continuing to grow or if it is failing on its own. If the latter they can continue to monitor your blood HCG levels, and if the former they may offer you drugs to end the pregnancy. Unfortunately in either case you may end up having blood tests every 48 hours for the next few days which I know isn't terribly pleasant.

My sister had a lot of bleeding during her pregnancy due to a graze on her cervix. All was fine. Good luck for next week xx update us xx

Superstar2468 · 05/07/2024 16:33

Hi, final outcome update for those following.

On wednesday I had a repeated scan where they found the pregnancy (with a heartbeat) in my right tube. The pregnancy measured 7w2d and with high HCG levels (7,000) I was at risk of rupture and kept in for emegency surgery which I had 7 hours later. I was told I would lose my left tube due to the size of the pregnancy. Despite not showing any typical ectopic symptoms.

All staff were very sympathetic and made me as comfortable as possible whilst I awaited surgery. I was obviously overwhelmingly emotional of the outcome and freightened of the procedure itself (had one of the nurses tearing from my freightened sobbing!)

I had a laposcopy salpingectomy. Fortunately it went very smoothly with minimal bleeding and I was out of recovery and back on the ward within an hour. After monitoring me overnight, I was mobilising and sent home with loads of medication to take over the next 2 weeks. With added morphine for the horrendous trapped gas shoulder pain (this hurts more than the incisions!)

I was told my chances of a healthy pregnancy does not half losing a tube but I am at risk of it happening again and future pregnancies would be monitored early.

I want to thank you all for your support over the past few weeks on this thread, you have helped me in so many ways 💐

So sorry to hear of your loss. Sending you healing thoughts. Look after yourself over the coming weeks and surround yourself with things/people that make u happy xx

Okayornot · 05/07/2024 17:10

Glad you're ok and recovering.

Mint tea will help with the trapped gas.

It's true that your chances of conceiving again have not halved. Your reproductive system is all very close together, so that your one tube will be able to
pick up an egg from either side. A study of pregnant women with one tube showed that this had happened in a third of cases (they can tell because of the side the corpus luteum is on). In my case, my next pregnancy after I lost my tube did come from the tubeless side which I found amazing. In the meantime, take it easy. I know it is all one hell of a rollercoaster.

I'm sorry to hear this OP.

Hope you are feeling OK after the surgery. I had a ruptured ectopic in April, you really don't realise how much you use your stomach muscles until you have an abdominal procedure like that.

Take care xx

How are you doing?

Thanks for reaching out, im 5w 2d post surgery. I was off my feet the first week. I have been more tired than usual since, doing too much still really takes it out of me (I have two toddlers at home on summer hols). My incisions have healed well, stitches are taking longer to disolve than expected. Able to intercourse as normal (being safe for now). No signs of period yet
