Too much weight gain? (First trimester)

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and have already put on about 5-6 kg. I've always been slimmer side. I'm 164 cm and usually 53-54 kg but now I'm nearly 60...!

I'm not surprised I gained in the first trimester; I usually am very restrictive with my eating when not pregnant, but I gave in to cravings and the only things that I wanted that didn't make me feel nauseous during the first weeks were pretty calorific foods. However, for the past few weeks I've been eating more healthily, not going crazy and getting back to exercise. I don't think I look hugely bigger (and I started showing at about 9 weeks as this this is my second pregnancy) but the number on the scales says otherwise.

I steered completely clear from scales during my first pg as I've always been sensitive about weight. Should I be concerned? I don't want it to continue snowballing! I hear so many stories about no weight gain (or even weight loss!!) during the first trimester for others.

Honestly I wouldn't worry. I always put on a lot of weight in the first trimester, I think this time it was 5kg. A lot of women find eating beige/high calorie food helps with the constant nausea and is the only thing they can stomach, ask you are definitely not alone.
It always slows down for me second and third trimester as I go back to normal eating and getting out more. You have already mentioned that your eating is getting back to normal so you will probably also find your weight doesn't rise so quickly.

Just be mindful, you are pregnant and growing a human is hard graft. Putting pressure on yourself now about weight gain isn't the time to be obsessing over it, so please do enjoy your pregnancy, the weight loss will happen once baby is here ☺️

Thank you, @readyforroundthree - I really needed to hear that. :)

Tbh that doesn't sound like a ridiculous weight for you to be. I was borderine anorexic in my teens, so I understand being horrified by the weight gain but please cut yourself some slack. You are growing another human and your body is telling you that you need this food. Once baby is here you can think about weight loss - for now be kind to yourself and concentrate on being healthy, first and foremost.

I wouldn't worry. With my first pregnancy I started at 60kg (170cm) and gained 8 kg in the first trimester. It slowed down after that.
I think slimmer you are, more you put on at the beggining. I lost all the baby weight it 2 months.

I am pregnant with my second and the same happened. I haven't gain anything in my third trimester.

Just to chime in agree with PP - have always put a lot on in first trimester due to constant nausea, and then the weight gain really tailed off during latter half of second/third trimester. And the weight will come off the other side, esp when back to normal eating. I would just concentrate on the pregnancy for now, your body knows what it’s doing!

BabyFever1345 · 19/06/2024 16:04

I was the same! I was quite healthy and fit before pregnancy so I had this image in my head of eating healthy, going to the gym, etc.

Reality was very different. All I could stomach was beige food, pure carbs that did not keep me full, until about week 14.

Second trimester I was SO hungry so even though I was eating healthy, I ate A LOT

Add in PGP from week 15 which means I can do fuck all exercise other than some gentle toning stuff....

Third trimester now and quite chubby. I've gained 15 kgs by week 29. Dr isn't worried.

I just need to accept it, and lose it afterwards.

Growing a human is soooooo much harder than I thought!

Thank you, everyone, it's always comforting and reassuring hearing other stories and knowing I'm not alone in this feeling. I might jettison the scales for now as it will only depress me and as long as I keep healthy for the little jelly bean that's all that matters. It can all be shed afterwards, especially with breastfeeding.

Yes, @BabyFever1345 , growing a human is so hard. I was looking back on my first pregnancy through rose-tinted glasses and had edited out how hard it was...!

I put on 24kg in my first pregnancy. Lost it once baby was born quite easily but wouldn’t have cared if I hadn’t.

Sausagedog101 · 19/06/2024 18:32

I really wouldnt worry. To a large extent, I think your body does what it wants when pregnant.

I ate the same for both pregnancies and put on 2 stone 4 with my first and just under a stone for my second. Literally no rhyme or reason!

Peonies12 · 21/06/2024 09:32

I really wouldn't worry about it, and I'd ditch the scales. I've happily never owned any! I've just been focusing on healthy eating now in 2nd trimester I feel much better, and doing exercise when I've felt like it. It's better to focus on getting good food in.

hopsalong · 22/06/2024 08:10

I think if you're thin to start with you're meant to gain more weight in total and that happens earlier.

I gained a lot more weight in my second pregnancy than the first. Started both at about 57kg (175cm). Got up to 70kg in the first and 78kg in the second. Not sure how much I gained in the first trimester but was already 70kg when we went on holiday when I was 24 weeks.

The first pregnancy I was my pre-pregnancy weight within a week of leaving hospital. The second pregnancy it took about 6 weeks, but had lost most of it within a week. Not sure how that worked! I did have big babies (4.3-4.5kg) and polyhydramnios. I also lost 3 litres of blood with the second.

Hello everyone. I feel the same. I'm so distressed that in 10 weeks I have gone from 63kg to 69 kg it's like every day there's a new pound on the scales. My family are saying 'enjoy' it but it's my first pregnancy at 39 and I am worried if it carries on like this I will be very ill at the end of my pregnancy. I also have experienced disordered eating since I was 14 and in adult years have fasted. I can't do this now and I need to eat pretty frequently as I have the nausea that only stops by eating. I'm so so so hoping it slows down. I an happy to be pregnant, please don't get me wrong, I'm just so freaked out when nhs says 3-4lbs and I'm on 10lbs gain. I'm worried also I will be weighed at my 12 week scan. I'm not sure if I should try dieting. I'm walking 40 mins a day but don't have energy to do hiit, was hoping in second trimester I could do that again. Thank you for listening to me. I feel really bad.

WaitingforRainbows9 · 01/08/2024 10:43

I'm sorry to hear that @confusedbyitall23! I piled on weight quickly in my first trimester but I'm now 20 weeks and the weight gain has slowed (I'm only about 1.4 kg more than I was at 14 weeks). Looking at stories, I think some women just put a lot on at the beginning and then it evens out a bit. I think the "only put on a few pounds in the first trimester" is nonsense and demoralising for those that do. Your boobs are immediately bigger and you're pumping a lot more around your system so it's naturally going to increase.

I definitely wouldn't diet but just try and eat more healthily - I found this a lot easier when the nausea died down in the second trimester. If you're in the UK, they won't weigh you at the 12 week scan. At least, I've never been for any of mine. In my first pregnancy, they only weighed me at my booking appointment and so far same for this one.

If it's any consolation, I did lose all of the weight within 4 months after having my first, and I'm trying to remember that when I have moments of panic. Breastfeeding meant the weight fell off, like it does for a lot of people, without even needing to diet, so try to exclusively BF if you can. (Even if you can't, though, many still manage to lose the weight without!) I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry - there's enough anxiety during pregnancy without adding weight into the mix!

Thank you so much, could cry reading your message, thanks hormones! It's really reassured me, I've got myself in such a flap. Thank you for your kindness and compassion:)
