I got a phonecall from a colleague tonight to say they've tested positive for covid and are extremely unwell with it. The worst case of covid they've had apparently. We had an hour long meeting yesterday in close proximity. I'm 36 weeks pregnant and to be honest covid hadn't really been crossing my mind. But now the more I think about it I'm starting to worry if she's that unwell would it be serious for me and baby? Anyone had it recently and any reassuring stories?

Everyone is different with every illness

Some people could be really poorly while others no symptoms at all

and what is the ‘new’ strain of Covid?
How do they know its a ‘New strain’

Yes true, I suppose only time will tell. I just suddenly got worried but there's nothing I can do about it.

Same as they've always been able to tell I guess. The spike proteins and differing symptoms. It's called FLiRT apparently. I guess because she's telling me she's extremely unwell I'm just thinking along the lines of the early strains which were very dangerous in pregnancy and I guess we don't know what new ones bring.

Because virologists study exactly this.

Yes, cases are rising in many countries (difficult to tell in UK as our surveillance is so shit now, but as it tends to be a global phenomenon there's no reason to think we'll escape it).

Covid in pregnancy can be very serious - all any any strains.

You need to think hard about the risk/benefit of meeting people indoors. Wear a mask in circumstances you are not sure of (and definitely in hospital as infection control has gone to the dogs)

And lobby for cleaner air (ventilation/filters)

Viruses - whether it's the latest covid or avian flu jumping species - may well be too agile to defeat with vaccines. But they can't out-evolves masks, filters and better ventilation

My sister got covid twice in both pregnancies
She was fine, only a slight headache
Babies were fine

It would really piss me off to get a phone call like that worrying you when there is probably nothing to worry about when you are already tired and drained from pregnancy. People aren’t testing and informing anymore. Your colleague is a drama llama.
Just ignore and look forward to the birth of your baby! Good luck!

Iv just looked the new strain up

Its no more stronger than the other variants that have been floating around for afew years

So your post is rather scaremongering !!!

I caught Covid from the hospital I was admitted to with hyperemesis - both pregnancies - 2020 and 2022. All 3 of us are fit fine and healthy.

i wouldn’t worry it’s wasted energy but deal with it if you feel unwell. Hospital will do nothing different as in you won’t be kept away or refused visitors. But do tell your midwife if yoy become unwell

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I just panicked a bit in the moment last night. It's taken a lot to get this baby and obviously I do worry about things. But thanks for the reassurance!

I got covid as I started maternity leave at 38 weeks (a month ago), it was only a mild illness though, no fever, just congested like a cold for a few days. Both me and baby were fine, he arrived 2 weeks later fit and healthy!

It would only be scaremongering if there were no risk, or only a trivial one.

Infectious diseases during pregnancy can often be more serious than at other times.

Talking about clean air precautions is no more scaremongering than reminding people to wash their hands or follow pregnancy diet guidance to reduce risk of food poisoning.
