Autumn baby, will I need long sleeve vests?

I have got around 10 short sleeve vests and 5 long sleeve vests in each size. I have heard mixed opinions and some people saying long sleeve is better in winter, but also I can imagine the sleeves would ride up underneath sleepsuits? Turning to MN for the verdict :)

I had my baby in November and we used short sleeve vests under sleep suits and that seemed to work well. Then when he was a little older and was wearing more of an outfit with trousers, I’d do a short sleeve vest under a long sleeve one plus trousers. Worked for us, hope it helps!

You don't put a long sleeve vest on under a sleep suit.

Long sleeve vest with leggings/joggers as an outfit. Jumper/cardigan over the top if chilly.

Or short sleeve vest under a sleepsuit. Jumper or cardigan over the top if chilly.

I had a lot of long-sleeved ones but I preferred long-sleeved vest with dungarees to sleepsuits from early on.

I found long sleeve vests an absolute mare to put on under anything with additional sleeves so only used short sleeved.

You might want long sleeve going out or on particularly cold days, but depending on the temperature/insulation of your house then short sleeve will be fine (and easier). You’ll have the heating on when it’s cold in winter, so the room temperature is not likely to drop much lower than a mild day in a different season (unless you have an old house/one with poor insulation).
The room temperature is more important than the season.
Most, if not all, sleeping bags tell you the layers they should be in for sleep based on room temperature.
And for out and about it’s all about adding and removing layers so I don’t think long sleeve vs short sleeve really makes all that much difference in the grand scheme of things. Just go for ease.

I'd go with short sleeved vests to keep their core warm and then sleepsuits/babygrows to go over the top. Depending on what month they're born in and how cold it is, you'll probably be inside the vast majority of the time while you get used to being a mum etc. What is the temperature of your house like? There is a guide online somewhere about what to dress your baby in for the temperature (although might just be for sleep)

Word of advice though just go for sleepsuits/babygrows and not two-piece outfits (trousers/top). Waaay too much effort in the early days - you'll be changing their outfit multiple times a day so just go with one piece things you can grab in the middle of the night easily!!

Make sure your long sleeved vests are the ones with the cuffs you can turn into mittens as they scratch themselves often. Once they learn to chew their hands stop using the mittens part though or they turn into a soggy mess!

There isn’t a rule but personally I’ve only ever put sleeveless vests under sleepsuits. I used loads of long sleeved vests with both DC over winter by the time they were about 6-8 months and wearing trousers as opposed to sleepsuits, as they give a bit more warmth. I barely used anything bar sleeveless vests and sleep suits before then!

Used both with a late September baby and adapted as needed!

I think the opposite! Vest and dungarees were always far less fussy and annoying for me than sleepsuits with all their fiddly poppers and having to get all 4 flailing limbs in at the same time

This is what I was going to say. Nightmare having separate mittens, somehow one will always go missing 😂

If you google 'baby sleep clothes chart' you will get some very helpful charts. It will depend on the temperature of the room they sleep in and we all have different temperatures in our homes so what is right for one won't be right for your baby.

Buy larger size babygrows with just the right size vests not large vests so the sleeves are tighter on the vest and loose on the babygrows. you are right the long sleeves on vests can ride up but with enough space it's easy to fix just put your fingers in and pull it straight to get rid of the bunching.
