IVF due date

Good afternoon all, Today I had my viability scan after a successful IVF transfer, the scan showed a heartbeat which was a relief but it measured me at 6 weeks 4 days rather than 7 weeks 3 days which Is what I should technically be. I wouldn’t worry if this was a natural pregnancy but as I had my transfer on a specific date I dont understand how the due date can be 6 whole days behind what it should be. This is my first pregnancy so would be interested to hear similar stories that hopefully turned out ok. Thanks

This happened to me at the 12 week scan they just adjusted my due date to the IVF one.

They explained that with a natural pregnancy there is always a 2-3 week window where the woman could have conceived and all babies are born different sizes.
Congratulations!

My little one is now a toddler.

@Lay1990 Very similar to my experience with my daughter. At 12 week NHS dating scan, my daughter was measuring larger than average and they couldn't make her measure less, so my NHS due date was 6 days before my IVF due date (my area they refuse to use the IVF due date, they go with their NHS due date). My daughter was born 8.5lbs and long. My current pregnancy my NHS due date is 3 days before my IVF due date.

You also need to remember at this early a stage a TINY margin of error in the equipment used, how full your bladder is, the sonographer measuring you etc can throw your dates out really easily, as you're talking about mm differences in measurements for estimating dates. I'd really try not to worry :)

Thankyou both for replying I think I was a bit shocked and it threw me off because I just didnt understand how it could differ when we know the transfer date but you two replying has helped put my mind at ease a bit. Its going to be a longgg six weeks to wait for the 12 week scan but im trying to remain positive. Its all just a lot xx

@Lay1990 Its a long slog to the 12 week scan, and I often think that bit is the hardest bit with all the rubbish first trimester symptoms and there can still be a lot of anxiety about pregnancy continuing. Just try to continue to do things you enjoy as much as you can with any symptoms you're having!

Mine was the other way, measured 5 days ahead at 6 week scan and remained on that track. 12 week scan gave me due date 4 days earlier than the IVF planned date. I actually had a scan at 8 weeks aswell because they gave me a half price voucher and I was anxious, it made a big difference so don't be afraid to do this if you think it will help.
I'm 39+3 now and all been on track for the NHS due date I'm being induced Saturday

Lay1990 · 18/06/2024 17:43

I think i may book a private scan for a couple of weeks time just to put my mind at ease. Exciting that you’re so close! Hope everything goes smoothly with your birth 💫

I had a similar situation after IVF where I had a scan at 6w6d but was measuring about a week less according to their measurement scales, so they got me back in for another scan at 7w6d where I was then measuring right on that. It was a really hard week in between, and I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry, as @2mumlife said above, it can depend on the person doing the scan, the machine they are using, the position baby is in at that moment etc. At my 12w scan it was measuring a couple of days behind but all looking great and I'm 16w now and still fine. I have found several papers (I'm a scientist!) that have different scales for CRL vs weeks and it really depends on the data they use to inform these, a lot of them are based on just a few women and don't take into account IVF and the fact that we then know exactly when things happened!

@Lay1990 Unfortunately it is really common experience. And I know from a very clinical POV your clinic will be looking at is as a positive sign you can get pregnant. Just need to get the right viable embryo now. Wishing you all the luck in the future when you're ready to try again x

Lay1990 · 25/06/2024 21:18

@2mumlife Im just concerned about my other embryos. I have 6 more in the freezer and they all graded high. How will i know if theres some chromosomal or genetic abnormality with the others im not sure if they can test that now they are in the freezer. Because im on the NHS i dont think they do any elaborate testing. Anyway im just waiting for the medication to induce the miscarriage so wish me luck. And thankyou

OP posts:
2mumlife · 26/06/2024 10:24

@Lay1990 Unfortunately you wont know if the embryos are viable or not without testing / giving them a try. You can defrost to PGT test and refreeze, but I don't think this is often suggested as there is obviously a risk everytime you defrost an emrbyo that it wont survive, do defrosting twice isn't ideal. Its also not generally recommended unless you've had recurrent miscarriages or know one/both of genetic parents are a carrier of a genetic issue. With 6 embryos is you have a really strong chance that at least 1 of them will be viable, so your best bet is probably just to go ahead with FET when you're ready.

Hope the process of with the medication is as straightforward as possible. Hope you're taking good care of yourself and giving yourself time to process and recover.

Lay1990 · 26/06/2024 15:25

@2mumlife thankyou. I really appreciate you responding xx
