Travel insurance for 32/33 weeks pregnant

Most travel insurance companies don't mention pregnancy (as it's standard I assume and not considered a medical condition), but looking at t&c’s many excluded medical costs if you were travelling less than 8 weeks before due date (ie prem birth only was covered) (axa and admiral) and I'll be about 6/7 weeks.

Have you any recommendations for companies that will cover me?

thanks

Travel abroad is unwise at that gestation - is it absolutely necessary? You need costs for neonatal care if baby comes while you are away. I would suggest going via a broker and expecting to pay in the high three figures if not more.

Travelling till 35 weeks pregnant for a low risk pregnancy is absolutely fine and safe. This is short haul.

Travel insurance doesn't cover the costs of giving birth after 32 weeks gestation. Some it's even earlier

If no one will insure you, that's to do with risk.....

Peonies12 · 16/06/2024 18:21

I’ve not come across any that would cover, given the costs associated with a premature birth. I wouldn’t travel that late on myself, too risky.

It’s not a case of ‘no one will insure me’ I was asking for recommendations for companies. Stop being so negative. I’m a random stranger on the internet, if you have no helpful information on travel insurance companies then scroll on by. 👋

Most airlines let you fly up to 35/36 weeks so I’m not concerned. Looking at dates it will be 7.5 weeks till my due date when I arrive home, which is a lifetime when pregnant. Just wanted to cover all eventualities and have the insurance in place just incase

You might find some specialist cover with insurers that cover medical events, but you won't find any mainstream insurers to cover that gestation.

Previous posters are correct, the expenses involved in a pre term birth abroad, your care the babies care, repatriation etc... are prohibitive.

LittleBearPad · 16/06/2024 21:16

You’ll need a fit to fly note too and your insurance, if you can get it, will be expensive. Why are you planning to fly then?

Fit to fly sorted already, dr and midwife both happy, many airlines don’t actually need them but I’m taking one just incase

Where would I look for specialist cover? I guess it’s the same as standard insurance doesn’t cover over 75 year olds to travel but obviously specialist ones do

Hi, I looked for insurance for between 33-35 weeks for a trip and couldn’t find any. It was for a long haul flight and in the end couldn’t justify the potential cost of having to rearrange flights home if the baby made an appearance overseas.

Ceramic272 · 17/06/2024 23:36

sorry not to be helpful but did you find anything? I have the same question for 32 weeks.. maddening that doctor and midwife (and even airlines) are happy for me to go but insurers aren’t!

The midwives and doctors won’t be responsible for the costs of overseas hospital stays or repatriation costs.

Sure, but insurers are still happy to insure (for an high premium) all sorts of pre existing medical conditions that could require lengthy hospitalisations abroad. Like I don’t see how someone elderly with a heart condition is lower risk financially for them. It’s odd to me that not a single policy seems to go past 32 weeks (and obviously I’d expect it to be a very expensive policy). I assume the reason is there aren’t enough pregnant women using the policies to be worth it- whereas there are plenty of people with medical conditions so they make more than they pay out.

Exactly! Airlines let you fly up to 36 weeks and they wouldn't if there was a risk. Dr and midwives provide notes and wouldn't do so if it wasn't safe. I'm going to ask my grandparents who they use for insurance and will report back. My trips not till the very end of August so I'm sure I'll find something before then

Hi, did you find one that would cover you? I have this exact predicament for a trip on Thursday. It's a wedding and only in France at 33w so I'm comfortable with the risk (as is GP/midwife/airline etc) but would rather pay for an expensive policy for peace of mind. Thanks

TripleESept24 · 09/09/2024 21:56

Try P J Hayman or All clear. I work at a broker and we use them they are pretty good with medical conditions etc, all though I've never had a pregnancy query! They seem quite flexible

I called LV travel insurance and they said they don’t class pregnancy as a pre existing condition but if a medical need arises it’s covered. Give them a ring they have a specific section detailing pregnancy that isn’t in their normal policy. I went on my holiday and have just got home and baby is still inside. No problems or worries at all
