Fragmin blood thinning injections

Hi all,

I had a C-section 3 weeks ago and was told I would be having 10 days of fragmin blood thinning injections. As I went to leave the hospital on discharge a different nurse told me I’d be getting 40 days of injections and gave me more boxes. The tiredness was real and I didn’t think to ask why the change.

I have managed 3 weeks of the injections but they are now getting so painful and I’m bruised all across my tummy.
I was just wondering as I was originally told 10 days whether it would be safe to stop the injections early. Looking at the guidance from the hospital I didn’t have many risk factors to increase to 40 days. I have also been very mobile since the day after my C-section.

does anyone have any experience with these injections?

you really need to go back to the prescribing team and ask them. There are quite clear guidelines so hopefully they can explain their rationale.

Obs anaesthetist

There are 2 durations for clexane, 10d or 6 weeks depending on how many boxes you tick. They prob miscounted when they first told you how long it was for

No it's not safe to stop early you're clearly deemed high risk for clots. Rotate the injection sites to thighs etc but don't stop x

Hey OP. I’ve been on these since 33 weeks I’m now 35+2. Have to do them in my stomach as I’m injecting insulin into thighs 😩 I’m on these til I go into Labour (either induction or c section at 38/39 weeks). It’s because could be high risk for blood clotting. It’s painful and I’m bruised but I’ve found a trick that’s helping. I put an ice pop on the area I’m going to inject 5 mins before and once I’ve injected and released, push down on the area it’ll stop it bruising.

Really useful tip thanks! Had a poor lady on them for 2y as had a clot and oral blood thinners aren't licenced for cancer. She cried and hugged me whwn I got permission for her to swap

You need to ask them. Have you been rotating sites? I've been on these for months and probably have another 6 to go 😭 but I swap between stomach and both thighs and getting dh to do them just above my bum, was told these were all acceptable places so I don't end up too bruised in one place.

Stat going in your thighs instead for a rest from from your tummy

Flopsy145 · 16/06/2024 08:33

I did it in my thighs and alternated sides each day. I also only had 10 days. Definitely ask why you had to be on them for so long and whether you can stop them at all!
