2 miscarriages in a row

Sorry if this is the wrong place, I guess I’m trying to find the best place for success stories. Yesterday I discovered that for the second time in a row my pregnancy is not viable. I had a MMC (blighted ovum) discovered at 12 weeks last autumn which was very traumatic, this current pregnancy has seemingly been doomed from the start as I have been bleeding almost throughout, and had only very faint lines, I’m only 5 weeks so this maybe classed as a chemical and I’m hoping it will resolve on its own.

I’m absolutely gutted. I cannot work out where we are going wrong. We are lucky enough to have a 5 year old who was an accident where prior to finding out about them we were doing all the wrong things, drinking, smoking. Now we’re very healthy and do everything we’re meant to be doing, but it’s like something in me has fundamentally changed, I can’t work out how it was so easy the first time round, but so hard now.

Any success stories of pregnancy after two miscarriages in a row would be appreciated. Currently it feels incredibly all consuming, upsetting and unachievable.

So sorry about your losses, it's heartbreaking isn't it. I had three early losses and an ectopic pregnancy and am now 28 weeks pregnant and everything is going well so far! I got pregnant first time with my son. Secondary infertility is fairly common I think (unfortunately!).

@Lou490 so sorry you're going through this. I had a similar year last year. MMC discovered at 11+4 in April, early loss at 4+5 early September, and unfortunately another loss straight after that at 7wks end of October. It was really draining. I was primed for the two later losses due to faint tests and in the case of the third, weirdly progressing HCG levels so they weren't as much of a shock as the first loss.

I was referred to fertility consultant and we were waiting for the appointment to come through. Decided to pause TTC until after Christmas so we could try and enjoy it with our almost 3yr old. Plus by that point I felt too mentally drained to put myself through it again. Stopped tracking etc. Then the day of my work Christmas party I suddenly felt weird and realised I hadn't yet had a period since my last loss. Hadn't thought too much of it as knew things might be a bit out of kilter after the MC but I thought I'd better test before the party just in case. A second line came up and I couldn't believe it. My first thought was 'oh great, that's Christmas ruined then' as Christmas would fall around the 7/8wk mark.

Currently at 30+4 with our second little boy. Can't quite believe we've got to this point. Likely we'll never know what caused our run of bad luck last year (possibly was just bad luck!). Things I had done differently:

  • started taking CoQ10 after my second loss. Supposedly takes approx 3 months to improve egg quality so the timing is interesting.
  • started taking additional Vit D as well as my usual Pregnacare. Vit D has been linked to reducing miscarriage risk.

This time last year I was right in the midst of grieving my MMC and had no idea I had two further losses ahead of me... Yet this year I'm on the home stretch with our new little bundle of hope. I really hope you will be able to say similar very soon. Things can change quite suddenly. It is also important to properly grieve and process what you're going through though. Right around the time I must have conceived this little chap I had an appointment with a bereavement midwife and talked through my losses and basically sobbed on her for an hour and that was very cathartic too! Who knows, perhaps that also helped.

Sending you lots of love and really hope that you have brighter days ahead very soon. 💗

So sorry for what you are going through OP. I had a healthy pregnancy followed by two miscarriages and then a healthy pregnancy. Sometimes it is just bad luck hope that gives you a bit of hope x

Hello, I’m so sorry to hear of your losses. I’m sorry I can’t give you a positive story (yet 🙏🏼) but my story is so similar to yours I couldn’t not respond! I have had two losses this year and we have a beautiful 5 year old who was a surprise! I am trying everything - healthy eating, stopped drinking, stopped caffeine, supplements every day etc - very much unlike when we had our daughter ha

Its so hard, I hope so much it works out for you too, there are so many positive stories 🙏🏼 xxx

So sorry for your losses, it’s so hard.

I have had 4 miscarriages (3 missed miscarriages after IVF) and an early natural pregnancy at 5 weeks.

I am now pregnant and things are going well!

I lost 1.5 stone (I wasn’t particularly overweight but feel better now) and shifted the focus from cardio to weights 3-4 times a week.

I had a vaginal microbiome test (which you have to pay for privately I think - circa £200) but it showed me I had 0% lactobacillus present (even though I don’t suffer with anything wrong down there normally) and I started on specific vaginal probiotics and got a retest a couple of months later and everything was in balance. (I think this was a big one for me as I conceived the month later).

I also started taking a really amazing omega 3 - brand is zinzino - they’re different from others due to the fact it doesn’t oxidise when you take it like most of the shelf. I had been taking this for 12 months along with their other supplements.

good luck and wishing you all the best. X

Thank you all for all your experiences and I’m so sorry to hear of your losses. It’s so hard. I feel totally consumed by it all currently, it just takes up so much of my time thinking about it, googling it, trying to think of what I can do next month.

Currently in total limbo with this pregnancy as I had 2 days of light bleeding and my tests have just got lighter and lighter to now almost nothing, but I’ve not bled now for 5 days. I just want to get it over with.

We’re both early thirties/late twenties, healthy bmi, don’t smoke/drink, I do acupuncture and yoga, we eat so healthy it’s almost obsessional. We take quite a few supplements but I’ve just ordered a few more. I‘m seeing my GP later on in the week so I’m going to beg to see if we can have any investigations at all, even just basic things.

Thank you again, I hope to be back here with positive news one day🌈

Snookypook, sorry to butt in. Just wondering how much you had as a total vit D intake each day. I am currently on 4000 iu per day as mine was very now after my MMC last year. Been on that for about 4 months and now measuring as adequate. Just wondering if I need to up it a bit.

Mine was only 1000iu per day in addition to the Pregnacare.

Hi, sorry to hear about your losses. I had 2 miscarriages in a row years ago, and then went on to have 2 babies.

I did Accupuncture & I also took progesterone for the first 12 weeks of my 2 successful pregnancies. I begged for some tests after my second Mc & the doc agreed & I was borderline low progesterone so they agreed to the progesterone pessaries. Best of luck, I hope you get some answers at your gp x

Thank you Snookypook. I have been gold to drop to 2000 total if I fall pregnant and my levels have now reached adequate so that's good at least.

I had two in a row as well. Unfortunately it can just be bad luck - they say about 1 in every 4 or 5 pregnancies ends in miscarriage, so the NHS usually won't investigate unless you've spent a year or more trying, or after the third miscarriage.

I actually found this slightly reassuring in that once I'd had the second one, I knew that if I managed to get pregnant a third time, it would get me somewhere - we'd either end up with a baby OR we'd get some investigations and hopefully some answers.

Also because it is so common it is quite likely that you haven't done anything to cause these miscarriages - just bad luck. Sorry because it's horrible all the same, but try not to worry that you are getting something wrong. Chances are you're doing everything fine.

I did end up having 2 more children after the miscarriages so there is hope.
