Brown/red tinged watery spotting at 6 weeks

Hi everyone.

I had an early miscarriage/chemical pregnancy a few months ago - so ever since I found out about this pregnancy, I have worn panty liners to make sure I can see any signs of bleeding. Not really sure why, really.

I’ve managed to hit 6 weeks today, with no signs of blood, and so actually started to feel happy that maybe this might actually stick around. But as I’ve got home from work, Ive noticed brown spotting on the pad. When wiping and checking internally it’s brown tinged with red/pink. And it’s watery.

I was thinking I’ll wait (as it’s now 7pm) and call the EPU in the morning for advice. Is this the correct thing to do? I know they can’t do anything for me regardless, if it’s ending it’s ending… but is it still worth informing them of the situation? Or is it better to wait to see if it gets heavier?

For the last 3 days my pregnancy symptoms have gotten stronger and I’ve been feeling very sick in the mornings. I’m exhausted all the time and my breasts hurt. I get aches and little pains (nothing major) in the front and in my lower back, that come and go from time to time, usually on the right side.

My husband and I have agreed not to tell anyone this time, as we told both our parents and our close friends the first time and it ended in heartache. So I have no-one to talk to about this, or ask for advice.

Thanks for reading, advice would be great.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this. Pregnancy especially after loss is such an anxious time. I've been there.

First thing to say is that it's impossible to know what the spotting means at this stage. The pregnancy could be viable, or unfortunately it could mean a miscarriage. I've known it to go both ways.

In terms of who to contact, yes I would contact your EPU or GP (whatever it is in your area, my GP had to refer me to the EPU). If only to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, for example. You'd be very unlucky and it's probably not that, but it would be nice to have some reassurance or answers either way.

I really hope it goes your way. Try to keep the faith for a bit longer, but know that this happened twice to me back in 2020 and now I have two healthy children 💐

yeah, I have read it can go both ways and that red is usually the bad colour. When I checked around 11pm it had turned red when I checked internally, but only spotting tiny bits of brown on the pad. Is back to brown internally again now and still watery. Haven’t slept well at all but still hopeful it’s going to be ok…

Thank you. I will call them today when they are open. I just have to keep telling myself if it’s the end, it’s a good thing it will be happening earlier rather than later, I’d be destroyed if I didn’t find out until the 12 week scan.

Fingers crossed my outcome is like yours 🤞🤞🤞 and congratulations that it all worked out for you.

Thank you, I really hope you’re right! Will still call the EPU in a bit to have a chat, hopefully ease my anxiety a bit.

Hi best of luck today x
I had a miscarriage then pregnant with intermittent bleeding all the way thru and he was completely healthy (big hehe) baby
I did have cervical erosion and had to have a colposcopy etc as soon as I'd had him so I reckon that added to the bleeding maybe

the amount of things that can happen to the female body, especially during pregnancy amazes me. Just had a google of cervical erosion, I’m glad they arrived with no problems! 🥰

The EPU midwife was lovely and booked me in for a scan for 14.30 today. My morning sickness was still strong this morning and my breasts are still super tender so taking that as a good sign for now. I will find out soon enough if this pregnancy is over or if it’s just one of those things that happen to some people…

Just in case anyone sees this and wonders what the outcome was. I had a small subchorionic heamatoma. The sonographer said it will either be absorbed internally or a little bit more might come out but other wise the pregnancy is looking good for 6 weeks.

The reason for my right sided pain was a juicey 3cm corpus luteum cyst giving me some bother.

fingers crossed for the next 6 weeks + rest of this pregnancy. I can breath a bit easier this weekend.
