20 week scan worry - can someone help me interpret this?

Just had my 20 week scan but the baby wasn't lying optimally and was asleep, so I've been called back for another scan in a month. Also, the sonographer said "one of my arteries needs keeping an eye on" but didn't explain what this means. I'm not seeing my doctor for another week. Can someone explain what this might mean? Is it very serious? Is there anything I should do, I.e. rest more, be more active? Just a bit confused and emotional and afraid of going down a Google rabbit hole of doom...

If baby wasn’t lying in a good position and they need a redo, it’s very likely that they just couldn’t get the reading they wanted so have left notes for them to be read again next time. If they had concerns about the arteries; they’d refer you to a foetal medicine centre pretty quickly and you’d have your repeat scan there; with heart specialists.

Please don’t panic.

Thanks so much for replying quickly, I was really hoping it would be what you say. I started to Google and quickly decided against is as it looked terrifying and all worst case scenario. Better to ask someone who knows!! Thanks again xx

I gather that often things can't be seen well enough on the 20 week scan so it's not uncommon to have something or other monitored.

After mine they monitored placenta blood flow (or something like that) until birth and separately to that I have a vague recollection of a femur measurement being re done.

My follow up scan after the 20 week was done by the obstetrician who was hugely reassuring but I remember it was an anxious couple of weeks waiting. I wish I'd known then that often things crop up on the 20 week scan that either resolve or just couldn't be viewed sufficiently.

If it was serious they would have told you there & then.

There are so "that maybe might be could be a problem" things that get flagged at scans & then turn out to be zero problem whatsoever. Probably 99% of the items that get flagged are zero real problem. Many women get that experience. I got it: & I had many extra scans. The affected baby is now a grumpy but perfectly healthy adult. I'm such a scan skeptic now, I can't take them seriously at all.

Try not to worry.

As others you would have been referred to fetal medicine and told this anything straight away.

I had to go back at my 20 week scan also as baby wasn't playing ball.

The fact that the follow on appointment is a month away is further reassurance that it's nothing urgent/overly worrying. I was referred to foetal medicine after 20wk scan due to baby measuring small and we've been monitored fortnightly pretty much since then, now moving to bi-weekly this week (now 30wks). It is a bit daunting when any kind of follow up is mentioned but try to take it as reassuring that they are keeping an eye on you and baby and just wanting to ensure everything is progressing fine. Sounds like mostly it's just follow up to check things they couldn't see due to positioning which is super common. RE artery, I wonder if it could have been one of your uterine ones which can affect placenta/growth later on if they struggle a bit. Might be why they want to check in in a month. Again, not anything serious but just something to be aware of. My bi-weekly checks now are for blood flow to baby etc and will be uterine Doppler I believe. I'm quite reassured really as it just means that if at any point the environment in there is less optimal than NICU, they will get him out and provide the needed care. However, you are a long way from that being even a possibility. Just mentioning it to show it's a good thing to be well looked after ☺️

As others have said if there was something of concern they would have had you referred sooner. We had a query club foot at our 20 week scan, to me this doesn't seem like an urgent issue but I was re scanned at fetal medicine (different hospital) within a week where they checked everything again..still weren't 100% so had me back another week later and went through whole process again. All was fine but they are really very thorough with all the checks so there is bound to be things they can't see or that are queried try and see it as reassurance, if anything does crop up then they can deal with it early.

Thanks so much everyone for your replies, you are all wonderful taking the time to offer reassurance. I feel a lot better. I don't remember being so anxious with my first but then I was younger and probably less aware... thanks again 😘
