Ate chèvre cheese and then miscarriage- linked?

Long time lurker, first time poster and all that.

Ate some chèvre cheese whilst in Europe during week 5 of my pregnancy. Hadn’t realised I shouldn’t be eating it and by the time I’d realised, I’d eaten the majority of a baguette.

Went for a scan today (10 weeks) and doctor couldn’t find the heart beat. They measured that baby stopped growing at 6 weeks.

Could the cheese have caused the miscarriage? I’m beating myself up and in absolute pieces that I’ve done this. I was so cautious in my first pregnancy (ds now 4) but got a bit forgetful with this one.

any help/reassurance/advice is so so welcome.

Sorry for your loss. I highly doubt it was the cheese. I think the risk is food poisoning with some cheeses. These things sometimes just happen Flowers

No. I think the advice against soft cheese is because if you do get food poisoning you can get much iller than you would if you were not pregnant, when you might even just shake it off.

Really sorry for your loss; this is not your fault 💐

Hi OP,

im so sorry for your loss. I’m in food safety field. The reason for not eating soft cheeses is because of Listeria. The likelihood of contracting from soft cheese is very low but can be very dangerous for those who are old/ young/immuno compromised or pregnant. You would know if you had contracted listeria as you would have been very ill. It wasn’t the cheese. Don’t beat yourself up, you haven’t caused anything xx

No it wont be related, but naturally you are going to reach for something to cause it. Miscarriages are unbelievably common, Im sorry this happened to you but it wasnt anything you did at all.

Thank you all so much for your kind replies. I was nervous about posting as expected some other types of responses. I’m still feeling awful but better knowing that this might not have been solely down to me. Thanks again!

So sorry about your loss.
no, I wouldn’t say it was the cheese. I had a whole cheeseboard Inc blue cheese and was ok - this was around 4weeks and I didn’t know.

miscarriages are awful..! I’ve had many myself and you do question what you did wrong, but I promise you, it’s highly unlikely you made it happen- these things happen for so many reasons it’s horrible. You can’t pin point it.
make sure you get support and when you are pregnant again, get some reassurance scans due to the prev miscarriage.
