Progesterone and pregnancy advice

Hi,

I am after some advice about progesterone suppositories and pregnancy. In January, I miscarried at 6 weeks and my last cycle I had a chemical pregnancy at 15dpo. I have recently found out I am pregnant and I’m currently 5 weeks. I am terrified that I will miscarry again. I have no vaginal bleeding so far but wondered if I could take progesterone as I believe I could be low in it. In the uk they don’t give it to you unless you have vaginal bleeding. I have PCOS and currently take metformin too. Anyone taken progestrone when pregnant and not had vaginal bleeding? Not sure what to do? Any advice would be great

Hey. Speak to your midwife/Gp.
Tommy’s helped me - due to previous miscarriages.

you should ask gp to check your levels if you’re worried

hope it goes ok!!

Ask your midwife to refer to the early pregnancy unit. I am currently 22 weeks after 2 mcs last year (also have a 2 year old). I took progesterone from 6 to 16 weeks (no blood test so no idea if that's why this baby stuck!) The night before my 6 week scan, I had some very light bleeding/ reddish discharge (literally just when I wiped) and they prescribed without issue. I wouldn't normally suggest lying, but you could say something similar and see what they say...

@Chamalala she won't have a midwife yet she's only 5 weeks? I also don't think EPU would see her if there haven't been any problems. But it's always different in different locations, maybe where I live they have a higher threshold for seeing people.

I got a prescription for progesterone from a private doctor so that might be worth a shot but it's obviously very expensive. The doctor prescribed it me without me even being pregnant so I had it ready for when I next got pregnant.

I was prescribed it purely because of a previous loss and spotting with that loss but I was under the care of an ivf clinic and they prescribed it for me if I were to fall pregnant naturally probably would of had to take it if I had ended up having ivf as well. I did fall pregnant naturally and took it morning and night for the first 12 weeks (I actually absolutely hated taking it) but I'm 36 weeks now. Best of luck x

Hey, I saw a private clinic and was also diagnosed with pcos and put in metformin. I was told to take progesterone from confirmed ovulation and did. Now 38 weeks after 4 previous losses. I also had steroids, aspirin and intralipids though so can't say it was the progesterone solely.. but some drs do prescribe it earlier and there is some evidence that from ovulation can be helpful in PCOS cases as it can be too low for successful implantation.

Thank you for your replies! I asked my gp for a progesterone test and they did the 21 day one but I was actually pregnant when I did it (chemical pregnancy last month) and it came back that my progestrone was low and I had not ovulated. Obviously I had! They referred me to a specialist with a 6 month waiting list and they said they do not prescribe progestrone unless bleeding. I just didn’t want to wait till I started bleeding! Might say I have had some to get it but was just wondering if it would be harmful if I took it without symptoms??

Hi, I am currently on 2nd round of IVF . Had 5 losses (3 chemical and 2 missed miscarages ) I have never had any bleeding until they ‘came away’ if that makes sense, but this round of IVF I have been given progesterone suppositories as well as Lublion injections.. they have not checked levels as say they don’t do this mandatory and it’s just cause I have had so many losses they are giving me the extra progesterone, I am not sure though whether this is too much, should I just take the suppository without injection ? I have heard too much progesterone can hinder implantation ? My progesterone levels from the past have always been fine ? So I am scared too much progesterone might be a bad thing ? Anyone any advise would I would be greatful ?

Twinkletwinklelil · 28/05/2024 19:16

@hopefullsosbry wishing you so much luck!
I also had my levels tested and all ok but the progesterone has helped my pregnancies (currently pregnant and on progesterone) this will be my second successful pregnancy (fingers crossed)

they wouldn’t prescribe you progesterone if it would hinder you - trust the experts.

@Cat921 do you have a Tommys clinic in your area?
I miscarried for the second time and then Tommys helped me massively! They prescribed the progesterone and now my GP has. I wouldn’t lie about your symptoms as tempting as it is… likelihood is they’ll scan to check for any bleeding (they did this for me on my first early scan to ensure no bleeding)

progesterone can mask a miscarriage from what I understand too.
my best advice to you is to keep talking and sharing your anxieties. It’s so hard being pregnant after loss! Sending love

@Twinkletwinklelil thank you for the reply , I have decided I will continue on then as prescribed, I just wasn’t sure if with both would be to much but I think my dose isn’t to high so I should be ok ? That’s amazing it’s helped your pregnancy’s .. best of luck with this one 💖
