What does pelvic girdle pain feel like?

I'm having pain low down at the front (kinda where I'd imagine my fallopian tubes to be.) It feels a bit like pressure, as though I'm desperate to pee but with not feeling of actually needing to pee. It's constant but not so bad I need pain killers and doesn't feel like cramping. I'm 22 weeks. Is this pelvic girdle pain?

I have PGP but that's not how it feels like. My actual underside hurts a lot (think where your underwear goes, literally like a girdle) spreading to inner thighs, my pelvis is sort of locked in place and it hurts to walk/sit. My tailbone is unbearable to sit on as well.

But PGP can manifest itself in slightly different ways, bumping in case anyone more knowledgeable sees this.

@DontKnow1988 thank you. I'm not convinced it's pgp either!

From what I’ve read I think the location and feeling can vary. I’m having pain at the front, on my pubic bone. It’s like a dull ache but worse with certain movements eg. standing on one leg.

Intense pain when opening legs to put one for then the other out of the car.
Intense severe pain when trying to change hip position in bed, trying to roll over onto other hip.
pain when lying, standing, sitting, trying to get up from a sitting position or lowering down to sit.
Intense pain when walking and especially trying to walk up the stairs.
When I say intense pain, it takes your breath away such is the severity.
Its constant, it made me cry a lot and rendered me pretty much immobile for the last 4 months of pregnancy.

Pelvic girdle turned into SPD with the description I gave.

DontKnow1988 · 27/05/2024 21:39

@Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon that sounds horrendous. I'm so sorry. I am finding that only women who have had it, actually sympathise. Everyone else minimises the absolute misery that PGP induces.

Just hurts all over the place

From what I can gather it can be a multitude of things and presents differently for different women (and reportedly different pregnancies). I didn't have it with my first but second time around I thought I had sciatica. I had minimal pain underneath, sort of a nuisance but not awful. However terrible sharp pains in my bum and shooting down the backs of my legs (left side worse than the right). Stairs, getting in/out of the car or bath, walking, sitting, standing all triggered pain for me. Amusingly the advise was not to do anything that caused pain which is fine until you realise that there was literally no 'safe' position to be in from a pain perspective.

I’ve had spd so badly I was hospitalised on bed rest with what ended up being a broken pelvis by the end of pregnancy… it feels like the previous poster has described, not like you have. I could t walk, sit, open my legs, baby felt incredibly heavy. Literally carried round the bump and wore a supper from about week 16. Yours sounds like a bladder/ uti issue to me. So sorry whatever it is. It can be really tough.

This was exactly the same for me. I was on bed rest and had crutches to walk with twice weekly appointments with the physio. Nothing helped sadly and made the last 2 months of pregnancy unbearable.

Yours sounds painful @Sara1988 Have you spoken to your midwife? Could it be a uti?

Sara1988 · 27/05/2024 22:05

Gosh this all sounds awful ladies. Sorry you had to deal with all this!

I don't think I have this from what you've said, as not this painful at the moment and isn't made worse by movement.

Not a uti I don't think as passing urine fine. Possibly round ligament pain? Although again, doesn't quite sound like others have described as mine is constant. It kind feels like the baby's head is digging into the front right of my pelvis. Although I know at this stage that probably isn't the case.

I had PGP, I think from around 30 weeks. I couldn't lift my legs to climb the stairs, or get in and out of the car without my DP lifting my legs in for me. It was agonising. My didn't go post partum and I still get pain now.

twoandcooplease · 27/05/2024 23:33

Same as previous posters have said it is debilitating at times and can feel like your whole knicker line under the skin is burning bone to lift or move your legs or hips slightly
I once slowly dropped to the floor in Aldi as I took steps towards the door and then couldn't drive home. Awful

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 28/05/2024 18:47

And of course, they advise you take…paracetamol!!!
Which did absolutely fuck all for the day & night pain.

Let me tell you, I’m a tough old bird with a high pain threshold, not a great deal bothers me, but that was on its own intolerable.

I had to sit on a folded up big bin bag in the car so it could be used to slide me all in one go out of the car door without having to use my hips. Just lifting my feet up caused agony. So I had some handy coping strategies.

DontKnow1988 · 28/05/2024 19:36

@Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon Ah yes, good old paracetamol. Does help on a good day when the pain in mild. Absolutely nothing on a bad day. Bring on the baby!
