Hi all,

Has anyone had local or mental anesthetic while pregnant?

I have a biopsy under local next week which may lead to surgery under general.

I've already had an mri and am worrying about the amount of medical intervention I'm having during pregnancy.

Does anyone have any experiences they can share?

Local anaesthetic yes, and general anaesthetic can also be given in pregnancy safely, but like everything it isn't totally risk free. Routine procedures are generally delayed until after pregnancy but if your clinical team are aware of your pregnancy and deem it necessary to do before you give birth (understandable with a biopsy) then they will have weighed up that it is riskier to delay the investigations until after you deliver.

If you need a general anaesthetic, then an anaesthetist will talk you through all the specifics and will adjust their drugs they give you to drugs which are safe in pregnancy.

Try not to worry about the medical intervention you're having, I know it's easier said than done but clearly the team feel it is beneficial to do them now rather than leave it a few months.

Wishing you all the best x

One concern I have is some of the medical staff I've come across being a bit clueless. My gp said I couldn't have an mri then googled it and said she'd been mistaken. One doctor refused to give me an mri when I arrived but then my maternity consultant laughed at them and said I'd be fine. Then when I turned up at second mri appointment they were happy to do it... doesn't really put me at ease.
