BFP after ectopic

Hayl777 · 25/05/2024 07:52

I have recently received my BFP after surgical removal of an ectopic (and tube) at the end of February.
My head is all over the place.
I want to be excited but feel sick at the thought of maybe having to ho through it all again with the increased risk of a 2nd ectopic.
Every cramp sends me in a spin.
I have an early scan booked at EPU in two weeks and know i have to just get on with things.
I'm hoping the cramps are just normal early pregnancy cramps or maybe as it's less than 3months from the surgery it's scarring?
Any positive stories gratefully received!

Hi @Hayl777 . Congratulations on your BFP – although totally understand how anxious you must feel. I can't be of much help but I'm following this as I had an ectopic and tube removal at the end of April (so am around two months behind you). If you don't mind me asking, when did your period return post-ectopic and did you wait two cycles before trying again? After a miscarriage in February (after 18 months of trying) and then the ectopic, I'm keen to start trying as soon as possible (at 41 I feel like time is running out a bit).

Hopefully there will be plenty of people on here who can share positive stories with you. As one of my friends said, when I mentioned the percentage chance of my having another ectopic, the percentage chance of not having one is the number you should look at and that's vastly higher. I've read so many posts on here about ordinary pregnancy cramps so the chances are that that's what you're experiencing this time around.

That's good you have a scan booked in two weeks but I can imagine that must feel like a very long wait. Will that be at the six-week point? Are you able to get your HCG tested before then? I actually self-diagnosed my ectopic at 5+4 as I paid for private blood tests as had a feeling something wasn't right.

Wishing you well and hope others will add to this to share some reassuring stories.

Hi @NSC1980

thanks for your reply.
i didn’t bleed until about two weeks after the surgery, a few days after my HCG was no longer detected on a home pregnancy test.
1st period was 3 weeks after.
We waited until then to try again so we could be sure of dates, negative that cycle and positive this next cycle.
Im 38 soon so also felt time was against us.
Hope you get ur BFP soon and are recovering well x

I've had two BFPs since my ectopic less than 2 years ago and both those pregnancies have been in utero. The first ended in an early miscarriage but I'm currently 39 weeks with the second.

Remember, although there is an increased risk of a second ectopic, it's a small risk and you're much more likely have a normal pregnancy.

If it helps, the cramps etc have felt the same in all 3 of my pregnancies.

I hope the wait for your scan goes swiftly.

I'm 26 week pregnant after having my tube removed due to an ectopic pregnancy. The hospital were very good and got me in for a scan at 5 weeks. Can totally relate to the anxiety! The lady who did my scan was the same one there when I found out about my ectopic, I burst into tears just at the sight of her and sobbed through the whole scan, even after finding out baby was in the right place! (fortunately she was lovely and gave me a hug after!). Like others have said, try and just focus on the fact it's unlikely to be another ectopic. I did have twinges again but it would have just been due to hormonal changes.

@DemelzaRobins @Letsgotitans thank you both for replying, i really needed to hear that! 💗

Congratulations! I had an ectopic in August last year and got pregnant again in the October - they were both IVF pregnancies so very expensive and very wanted! I felt exactly the same when I got pregnant again and it took a really long time to settle into the fact that I was pregnant. We had an early scan at our EPU at about 6 weeks, I think they called it a placement scan. I actually wasn't able to register with my midwife that early, so I rang the EPU directly and explained the situation and they were really helpful! They booked me in straight away.

This thread has given me some hope. It's coming up to a year since my ectopic and I've started thinking it will never happen. Totally understandable though OP to be feeling nervous, it's such a traumatic thing to go through. I know if I'm lucky enough to get pregnant again I'll probably feel the same. Congratulations and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy.
