Unpasteurized sour cream :(

Mums I've made a big mistake. I regularly eat at a restaurant and have the omelette which comes with sour cream as a sauce. Now usually I always check if things are pasteurized but for some reason I was so hungry and wolfed it down out of habit (as I've had this dish many times before). Only after I thought to ask and the staff were even unsure and they contacted the supplier who said it's only 25% pasteurized. I'm 18 weeks. I feel really stupid and worried now :(

You and baby will be absolutely fine, just don't eat again if you are worried. X

You’ll be okay, so will the baby :) try not to worry, easier said than done though I understand. The reason why we’re not allowed to eat unpasteurized products during pregnancy is because of the risk of listeria and other food Bourne illnesses. The product itself does not pose a direct risk to the baby. How long ago did you last have it? If there was going to be any problems from having it, you’d be unwell within 6-24 hours of having had eaten it. Do contact your midwives if want to double check or if you feel unwell but I think you’ll be absolutely fine x

Also I know you’ve probably seen it already but if not here is a link to the NHS food/pregnancy page, I’ve found it really helpful to refer back to if I’m unsure if I can eat something or not

Typical sour cream has 25% fat.

It is illegal to sell unpasteurised dairy in the UK without it being labelled with a warning.

I think the staff may be a bit confused.

DON'T PANIC

I ate so much unpasteurised Brie over Xmas lol. I'm 32 weeks and my baby is fine.

There's no such thing as 25% pasteurised. Pasteurisation is a process that is either completed or not, it's not a sliding scale. It involves heating food to a specific temperature for a specific amount of time - the time gets shorter as the temperature gets higher. There is no 'partial' pasteurisation. It's likely the supplier or the restaurant were confused and looked at the wrong thing - as a pp pointed out, they may have got 25% from the fat content, but they definitely didn't get it from a pasteurisation label.

Thank you ladies! Yes after some digging I also questioned why would it only be fractionally pasteurised and I think they have got confused with the 25% fat content! Actually I'm Dubai at the moment and I think the staff just got confused reading the label - (or so I hope!)

Just to put things in to perspective.

I found out 27+4 with this pregnancy. I have ate and drunk everything as had no idea!

I'm sure a little bit of sour cream will be ok 🥰

I was exactly the same in my first pregnancy and worried about everything all the time. I think my google was full of 'can I eat X pregnant ?'

Good luck with your pregnancy xx
