Extreme period type pain, worse at night. Normal?

Hello!

im very early on in pregnancy (4 weeks 1 day). But have found for the last 6 days, since I found out - I’ve had extreme period type pains. No blood. But the type that wake me up, make me want to squat/poo/curl into a ball. I just kind of have to ride the wave of pain until it passes. Usually can last a few minutes. It’s starting to affect my sleep, and wake me up multiple times.

it’s nowhere near as bad during the day.

im used to having bad period pains when on my period, and used to take mefenamic acid for the pain. But the pain is different. It’s like the worst the cramps can get, but only last a few minutes, and comes and goes through the night. I can’t take this medication anymore as it’s a stronger type of ibeprofen.

im also experiencing really bad constipation which doesn’t help the situation, and really struggling to go. I’ve started taking one sachet of movicol in the morning but it’s not helping much 3 days in.

Does anyone have any advice? Or has experienced it before? I don’t want to bother the GP as it’s so early on. And I haven’t tried heat packs or paracetamol yet as not sure what’s safe and what isn’t. Google is conflicting

I had a chemical pregnancy/early miscarriage, am determined not to make a fuss or get my hopes up until at least 6 weeks… but this pain is no joke.

thanks for reading

Meant to say, had the miscarriage a few months ago. That was my first ever pregnancy. This is my second. So have no idea what’s normal and what’s not.

Since my second dc I get occasional anal cramping that would last for about 20 minutes. It was so bad I would pass out until I got used to it. When I mentioned it at my smear, the nurse said it was because something had shifted after my second dc. Could this be the case with you? Speak to your midwife though.

Op are you definitely sure it's not trapped wind? If you are experiencing constipation it could very well be excessive gas as well which you could be confusing for period type pains. It's very common to experience cramps in early pregnancy anyway, but maybe try some peppermint tea which helps me tremendously.

Hi OP.

I am 10 weeks pregnant and have had the exact same so far.

It’s been a mix of trapped wind, and period pains that feel like you have pressure in your bum. Really uncomfortable.

Mine tend to come at night and wake me up. I’ve had a couple of scans and everything is ok. I’ve also spoken to the dr who confirmed its completely normal and it’s everything stretching.

I have used a hot water bottle to help

hope this helps xx

It's implantation pains- I had them too x

I've just posted a similar thread, I'm experiencing really bad cramping too and now nausea has decided to join in, I've been a mess today 🙈 I'm 4 weeks +2.
It's my first pregnancy so not sure what's normal but just wanted to say you're not alone!
I've taken paracetamol and had a hot water bottle on me most the day and it's eased a little 🙂

I've found out today that I am pregnant, around 4 weeks and also cramping a lot. Completely normal I believe but like all other pregnancy symptoms, some get and others dont.

LizzeyBenett · 24/05/2024 23:05

Cramping is normal as your uterus is expanding it will feel like period pains, but being constipated won't help drink as much water as you can and get fibre into you x

I had similar and it turned out to be trapped wind. It was excruciating and I was convinced I was miscarrying but there was no blood. I can't remember how long it lasted but it was certainly no more than a couple of weeks.
