Slightly high result on glucose challenge test

Just received my results for the (non fasting) glucose challenge test and the value is 7.8 which is marked as high, but just 0.1 above the normal range (3.9-7.7). Has anyone had a similar result? What were your outcomes?

Hey hun. Mine was also only just over and was confirmed as GD. I knew I had it from about 24 weeks though as was at risk due to my Dad being Type 2. I tried to diet control it but ended up with severe poly so had to go onto metaformin. My bloods are much better now when I test and I can eat most foods I couldn’t before. GD isn’t the end of the world. Have they confirmed it’s GD? X

Thank you @AimeeLou84 it's not been confirmed yet, I think the next step will be the fasting diagnostic test but I literally just got these results in my portal so I'm waiting for them to get in touch.

What's poly? Did you have any symptoms from the GD?

I had the same result and have been diagnosed. You will soon know it to be right when you're testing sugars following certain foods and you see the spikes etc. it's overwhelming but defo better to have it diagnosed than not as with my son I was just under for the test so never got diagnosed and now we believe I did have it as I had placenta abruption when I had him and he almost didn't make it. It's honestly a blessing in disguise to know as you'll be well looked after and monitored X

Polyhydramnios - High amniotic fluid level. Max should be 24cm, I went in for a check up scan and the midwife noticed too much fluid, ended up being 36cm!! That’s when they pushed through my GD test quicker. I’m glad I found out as was eating loads of sweet stuff before - was my craving. I still have sweets and chocolate within reason and strangely enough I had a kitkat the other night and it didn’t spike my bloods but I am on metaformin now and it’s massively helped. How many weeks are you?

krazipan · 23/05/2024 12:59

I had exactly the same result. I did have GD and ended up on Metfornin then Insulin.

giraffesauce · 24/05/2024 12:59

@AimeeLou84 Oh that must have been really scary!

I'm 29 weeks today. Haven't received a call from the midwives yet, think I'll leave it until Tuesday and then ring the maternity unit myself.

My fasting was just over 5.7... I was diagnosed.
Every trust and lab has different tolerances for result

This is my second GD pregnancy. It's faff to start but once you get a routine and your head around your testing (the thing I struggle with is remembering!). You'll be fine and have extra care.

The key is don't be disheartened you can still enjoy some treats.

I'm on metformin x1 morning, x1 evening and insulin at bed. My fasting levels even now go up and down... they sit at like 5.2 now.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions xx

Yeah it’s best to get under control as soon as possible just to stop your worry really and to understand what you need to do

So I've just rung triage because I couldn't get it off of my head and they said it will likely take them days to call me back about next steps... and then I presume it will be several more days for the fasting test and the results. I asked if they're going to call next week and the person on the phone said "maybe". 😨

That seems wild to me, I understand my result is sort of borderline, and I've already started modifying my diet as a preventative measure, but if I do have GD and need to be on medication for it I'd like to know and get started ASAP to minimise the risk of complications!! Does this sound normal, should I chase them again early next week?

Try and find out the number for the diabetes midwife / team in your hospital, I do everything via mine and they are more on it than triage and my midwife. It’s like it wasn’t that important for them but mine did turn out to be. Google ‘Diabetes Team’ and your hospital it should come up.
They do annoy me sometimes these hospitals. You are trying to sort it and they just sit back. I’d chase next week to set your mind at ease, as if pregnancy isn’t stressful enough

I'd like to think they will be in touch with you asap.
I know our diabetes clinic/nurses don't run over the weekend. Which can feel frustrating. But ours have a message service and every time I've left a message or been concerned they have usually got back in touch very quick.
I'd say it's very unlikely they will put you on medication straight away usually they like to see a few days of readings.
I had a few weeks diet controlled last time, this time it was like 4 days 😰
The further you get in to a pregnancy, the more it can need medication and what not.
I'd imagine if there were any immediate concerns they would be right in touch. Xx

I know the feeling I wasn't diagnosed till 34 weeks had to wait 2 weeks for the test as well, was worried sick the whole time, I failed got the call cried my eyes out, im now basically 37 weeks, once I got told I had it I picked up a monitoring kit the same day from my local birthing centre however had to wait an additional 5 days to hear from anyone on what to do!
which was a group online session and absolutely useless, I found the gestational diabetes uk website very helpful when it comes to food and how important pairing foods is, however its alot of info so give yourself a few days to read over the website and take it in!

ive been doing this over 2 weeks now and finding it easier day by day, however im struggling to eat 3 meals 3 snacks as I have no appetite, I am currently diet controlled, still measuring big at recent 36 week scan so waiting for appointment next week to see where we go from here!

but I promise once you get over the shock, you'll be ok I was devastated, still am to be honest as now I know in other pregnancies ill have ill probably get. this again,

I had no symptoms at all but because of unrelated issues I got an additional scan at 32 weeks which showed her slighty bigger, 90th percentile, so got asked to do a test,
but its better to know u have it rather than not, cant say ive been supported very well as ive been left to figure it all out alone and my trust gives very bad advice on how to eat with gd.. nothing about pairing foods which I feel is essential!
my fasting was 4.0 and my 2 hour results where nearly 10!

giraffesauce · 10/06/2024 10:32

Hi, I wanted to share an update in case it's helpful for anyone in the future. I managed to get a follow up appointment for the Glucose Tolerance Test (the actual diagnostic one) a week later by phoning triage a couple of times.

All three results (fasting, 1 hour post glucose drink, 2 hours post glucose drink) came back in the normal range, so I don't have GD!

Thank you to everyone that replied and shared their stories and advice 🙂
