If you had pre-eclampsia, what were your subsequent pregnancies like?

I had pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy but didn't develop it until late (post 37 weeks) and it was mild - I was prescribed labetalol, kept in for a few days of monitoring and then induced. I'm thinking about TTC my second soon and am just curious about how this might affect my next pregnancy. I'm assuming I'll be consultant-led and that I'll take aspirin. I'm mainly wondering whether I'll be induced again (very keen not to be..!)

I had a similar presentation with preeclampsia in my first pregnancy, only I developed it earlier - it was first identified at 36 weeks and I was induced at 37+5 as they were getting concerned.

I was given mini aspirin and started out consultant led in my next pregnancy. Didn't develop preeclampsia and had DD2 in a pool in the midwife led unit of the hospital. Absolutely no interventions - she was born in 4hrs at 41wks.

I was admitted with high BP at 37 weeks with my second. I had a planned section booked but went into spontaneous labour whilst in hospital so had an emergency section. No one mentioned pre eclampsia and I went home the day after my section. When the MW came to do my 5 day check (I think) she sent me straight back to hospital with really high BP. I was admitted for a few days and then given BP meds for 6 months or so.

I was told it’s really unusual to get it with a second pregnancy without having it the first time. I wonder if it was because my first was born at 35 weeks and it was just too early for PE to show?

My third was fine and had no BP issues at all.

I'm one of the unlucky ones who had it a second time. 16% chance according to my consultant.

I was "consultant led" which consisted of one appointment, before being discharged back to midwifery led care. I see their point though. Not really a lot they can do unless you show signs of developing it again. At booking I was advised to take 150mg of aspirin daily (already was) and if possible to regularly monitor my BP at home (monitor was ordered the next day). I was also put on the FTM appointment schedule, which has a few more appointments, for better monitoring.

In end, I developed pre-eclampsia at around the same gestation (34 weeks) as first time around. However, an admin screwup meant I wasn't seen about it until 36 weeks. I was admitted straight to hospital (same as before, but this time with a fully packed hospital bag in tow. Fool me once and all...).

After a few days stay, induction is started at 37+1. Gels got me to 2cm pretty much immediately, but owing to: beds, staffing, and the sheer number of women going into labour naturally that week, I didn't get onto delivery suite until 37+5. One ARM, induction drip, 11 and a bit hours of labour, and (eventually) an epidural later I'm only 5cm, and baby is starting to get distressed. The towel is thrown in and I have an emergency C-section. Turns out baby had tipped his head back (we already knew he was back to back) and was stuck. Sucked, but it was what it was. Pure bad luck.

I had pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy. Picked up at 36 weeks and admitted to the ward on that day. Was told I'd be induced at 38 weeks. Waters broke naturally the night before I was due to be induced. Alerted doctors, told to sleep, seen on ward round, forgotten about, no pain relief, finally transferred to labour ward when I was 8cm dilated and given gas and air. Baby born fine hours later. 6lbs 7oz. Baby jaundiced. Woeful postpartum care. Readmitted 6 days later.

2nd pregnancy told I was unlikely to have pre-eclampsia again. Given aspirin to take from the beginning. Discussions about me being admitted with pre-eclampsia from 23 weeks. Problem was that I had a toddler and no family support. All extended family live overseas. Went on maternity leave early. It was decided that I could stay out of hospital provided I went into the pregnancy day centre 2 or 3 days a week sometimes for an hour or two, sometimes for the majority of the day. In the end born 5 days before due date. Labour was only a few hours from start to finish, no real pain relief. Baby 7lbs 1oz. Also had jaundice but recovered on her own. A few days after birth I developed a blinding headache which everyone thought was related to the pre-eclampsia. Had to go up to A&E and be monitored. I was fine.

Had pre eclampsia with my first baby - hospitalised and induced. I had 2 further pregnancies with no pre eclampsia and both were overdue! I was told it's more common with first babies by a midwife.

Forgot to mention postpartum!

Baby was slightly jaundiced (as my first was). Strict feeding regime, and a couple of sun baths by a window soon set him right. As my BP kept going low on the medication postpartum I was taken off it after the first night. No problems with BP since.

All in all, while it wasn't the experience I hoped for, as I'd been through it all once before I knew what to expect, so it was pretty good overall.

Unfortunately I had it with all of mine! Each time they said it wouldn’t happen again.

anicecuppateaa · 21/05/2024 22:50

I’ve had it in each of 3 pregnancies, it got progressively worse each time. 2nd and 3rd times I was admitted to hospital until babies were born.

SisterAgatha · 21/05/2024 22:52

I had it for weeks according to my community midwife. Every week she would send me to day unit only for them to say ooooh no what a panic over nothing, you just need a biscuit, and basically gaslight the both of us - and then boom, I was admitted as an emergency at 37 weeks when the situation escalated and my BP was 160/200 and I had to be carried through the door in a semi conscious state….

after that I was consultant lead both times, scanned weekly with both babies and it never developed a second or third time.

I was in hospital from 32 weeks with high BP until DS was born at 38.2. He wss induced when i started having protein in my urine at 38 weeks.
Dd was born at 37.2 no signs of PE at all
