TTC after IUD, what do I need to know?

Hi,

I have a copper coil fitted and will be removed this week. I should ovulate just a few days after, should I wait a cycle before TTC?

I keep telling myself I should let my body get back to 'normal.' When I had the IUD fitted I was told it creates an environment not great for the egg/sperm, pregnancy and that's how it works.

Is the environment back to normal straight away? Just worried of anything lingering that may upset a pregnancy and would be better to wait a cycle?

Please share your experiences, thank you :)

I’ve had a copper coil removed twice & went ahead with TTC immediately both times. Not aware of any reason why you should wait.

Did you get pregnant in the first cycles?

Yes, both times although the second time I miscarried that one, conceived again the following cycle.

Copper coil has no hormones In It though right it works by basically killing the sperm? So there shouldn't be any reason you can't try straight away

Hello98765 · 20/05/2024 15:15

You can try immediately
i conceived on the second month after having it out - one of the benefits of non hormonal coil is its unlikely to disrupt ovulation like the pill or hormonal methods are, so I believe you are more likely to conceive quickly.

Hello98765 · 20/05/2024 15:16

No there’s no other lingering negative effects of having had it in. The copper repels sperm but that is an immediate spermicide so vanishes as soon as its removed.

I had the hormonal coil and had it out the last day of my period, didn't expect to ovulate the following cycle but I did and fell pregnant, bit surprising as it had taken 6 months with my first after coming off the pill.
Apparently according to the nurse who took my coil out it does not affect cycle and your body should be back to normal as soon as it's out.

Remove IUD. Have sex. Often. It's fun

And how was the pregnancy compared to you other ones? I'm just worried about any lasting risks the coil may leave...

I had it out and conceived on the first cycle, the nurse told me i would be fine to just get on with it

how was the pregnancy and birth, any different from any others you may have experienced?

Pregnancy was better than my first which was 7 years previous. I was 41 with my second, so had to be induced, which wasn't ideal, it was a fairly quick birth, no tears. DD1 was also quick, with a 2nd degree tear.

Hi OP - have you read something somewhere to suggest that getting pregnant straight away after removal will impact a pregnancy? Did you discuss with the Dr at removal? Stick with NHS guidance for all things pregnancy - if there was any risk to a pregnancy they would clearly state this.

Good luck :)

The only difference was I had a subchorionic hematoma but that was a random occurrence and more likely caused by my previous c section. Other than that it's been the same as my previous pregnancy, no issues at all!

Not particularly read, the nurse that fitted it told me how it works, by 'creating an environment that isn't nice for the egg or sperm but I wondered if our bodies need time to 'flush out' any 'toxins' that may be lingering from the copper coil i.e.
