Hi all. I had GD with my first but it was late onset so i was only on meds for very little time.

This pregnancy i have GD again and have had it probably from about 9 weeks onwars (currently 15weeks). I am trying to diet control but i am on meds.

Can anyone recommend recipes or websites that helped? I have 5 months to go and i really want to be able to eat some sort of cake.

I know stevia and other unnatural sugar subsititues arent not good generally (and have effects on baby during pregnancy) so i am going to try chicory root.

Any tips or recommendations welcomed

I diet controlled but only from about 24 weeks. I didn’t try to find sweet substitutes tbh, I cut all carbs right down and I got my treats from things like cheese, sausages, peanut butter instead.

Honestly I can’t see how you’d be able to eat any kind of cake without a spike, even without the sugar the flour would cause problems. Low sugar ice cream or chocolate would be a better bet if you need something sweet, and have it with nuts to lower the GI more?

Have you been tested, it seems really early for a GD test?

I followed the South Beach diet when I had GD. Mostly low carb, loads of veg - carbs mostly as pulses, recipe books were good and many of the things we tried we are still making now. I know you’re not keen on sweeteners but I had
no added sugar angel delight and jellies as my sweet substitute, kept me from breaking.

I used to go for a brisk walk after every meal too, helps with the sugar levels.

I haven’t followed any particular diet with mine, all just trial and error foods. I can have kfc, McDonald’s, fish and chips and even a kitkat without mine spiking. We are all so different. My diabetes nurse told me to just try all foods and see what works and what doesn’t. Gestational diabetes Uk website is a good place to start but doesn’t mean all those foods will be safe for you x

@minipie it is very early and possible pre type 2 diabetes. I had early signs and fought for them to monitor me very early and i was right. My GTT was normal but my skin prick is not! There are alternatives to flour like coconut and wholemeal which i can try and i am going to try and adapt recipes using chicory root. I just need some more recipes to break up and not let me get too fed up. Tbh this baby doesnt want sweet but it does want carbs!

@Makegoodchoices I havent had to cut out carbs yet but have replaced or cut down so i am on wholemeal and brown rice which has had a dramatic difference on keeping my blood sugar well within range
.
i am doing brisk walks at least 3 to 4times a day. I also am actively swimming two a week and i know it helps because during my work week when i am.a bit more stationary- it can spike during the day.

@AimeeLou84 i can eat fried chicken but not the buns.

Part of the problem is i have moderate to severe HG on top so my list of foods and meals is already small and tbh anything can trigger me (a baby burpied sick in the park today and i was chucking up in a bush). I am not entirely sure way the effect of me vomming has on my GD. I may start testing within an hour after i am sick to check

I will have a look at the south beach diet for some recipe ideas.

Thanks all it is appreciated

Gestational diabetes Uk website and Facebook page has saved me the advice is amazing and recipes I've also heard horror stories of providers giving outdated wrong dietary advice to GD patients and as a result patients not controlling their blood sugars correctly .

Yes, it’s also worth a look at Glucose Goddess on instagram, she has lots of tips on avoiding blood sugar spikes.
