Hello everyone. I am FREAKING out. I found out I’m about 18 weeks pregnant and have had many episodes of binge drinking.
what I can recall: 11 & 12 weeks about a bottle of wine within 3 hours one Friday and one Saturday + two glasses of champagne!
Week 13 - a case of the four pack wine cocktail again within probably 2-3 hours
week 17- a bottle of wine again 2-3 hours

do you think I have caused FAS? :(

she’s hardly drank every day has she? this is such a needless and spiteful comment lmao

Alcohol issues are not just about daily drinking people delude themselves in thinking getting bladdered every few weeks is okay.
Have a read of the Drink Aware website and the NHS guidance.

Your comment is the only one that has come up on my notifications.
I was talking binge drinking in general not to do with pregnancy it's not good for a man either anybody who binge drinks is advised not to.....as stated in the last bit of the comment you quoted.

No one is disputing that binge drinking is good for you, I agree with that. The main issue with your comment is that the poor Op has just found out she's 18 weeks pregnant and is clearly riddled with anxiety. You then bluntly stating that she need should seek help with her binge drinking is not helpful, nor was it kind or necessary. Yes she needs to seek advice from her GP regarding side effects of drinking in pregnancy and posters on MN are not going to be able to help with that medically speaking, but your comment came across rude and judgmental.

Hi OP, a friend of mine didn't find out that she was pregnant until she was 36 WEEKS!

We were only 19 at the time and she had been going out and binge drinking (as people that age do) for the whole 36 weeks. Baby was absolutely fine and is now a very healthy and happy 8 year old.

Of course this isn't advisable, but just wanted to let you know about her experience to hopefully put your mind at ease a bit.

Congratulations on the pregnancy 😊

That is the problem with online and people's interpretation my post was 2 step factual yours an essay.....you had time I was interrupted. Medical opinions you need to seek gp but ask yourself why this is your drinking pattern because it's not a good one. Flower it up at will but that's the issue

Speak to your midwife, there is a lot of medical research out there looking at the link between alcohol consumption in pregnancy and brain development in children. Advising you that it 'will be fine because my friend drunk more' or 'you have damaged your child through your irresponsible behavior' will not help you or your child. Especially if you suffer from anxiety. Knowledge is power. Do your research, look at actual statistics and understand what the risk are, and how you can spot issues. Nobody here can give you advice as they do not have enough information on your specific case.

Thank you!

WOW! How crazy is that. So glad to hear everything turned out okay for her though. How is her child today?

Many of my friends were partying before they found out. One was 5 months!! She used to complain how tired she was and how wine was making her feel really weird, but she pushed on through!! (We would be at dinners, weddings etc). She was also lugging heavy loads and horse-riding every day. Her son is my godson snd is 11 now, bright as a button and absolutely no issues.

Aw being a God mom would be wonderful! Thank you for your response

My best friend did this - she found out at 16 weeks - having gone through her own wedding, honeymoon and various weekends away/nights out- drinking a lot more than you. Baby was very healthy (has just graduated)- it is very worrying though-welcome to the world of maternal guilt

Definitely loads of guilt. Thank you for your kind response!

@jannier your original comment has actually been deleted by MNHQ think that says it all

CanUNotTry · 15/05/2024 18:57

@Summergal1
My eldest is now 13 - no problems at all, perfectly fine

The fact you're worrying means you are already a good mum .... you can't undo what's happened but you can change things going forwards :-)
Please don't take others messages to heart - I see some have been removed already.

If you're worried speak to your midwife; they're honestly so kind - my best friend is a midwife and she sees things a lot - so there's no judgement if you wanted to speak to someone :-)

Peonies12 · 15/05/2024 20:06

I actually don’t think that’s very much. But it’s done now, you can’t change it. I would be honest with your midwife about it though, although I don’t think they can assess whether it has caused any harm. Some women drink far more every day throughout pregnancy and baby is fine.

You are so right!!! as stated I know no one can diagnose over this OBVIOUSLY, however my whole point was just to see if anyone had been through this (which I've learned many, many, many moms have before) - looking back maybe I should have worded better about my worries..
It means so much to at least hear some positive things based on what I have provided to you all. I appreciate your feedback more than you know!
