Measuring belly at midwife appointments

I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant and I have my next midwife appointment this week. But it's just dawned on me that I haven't once had my weight checked or my tummy measured. Is this not a thing anymore? This is my second pregnancy. I had my daughter 2 years ago.

I feel like my appointments are
"any questions?"
"Do you know how to find numbers for triage?" "Let's lay you down and check babies heartbeat"
"okay perfect, see you next time" and I'm shipped on my way out

I found with my second I didn't have measurements either. Apart from booking appointments, I didn't have weight check. I had some extra growth scans so thought that was why I didn't have measurements. I always had blood pressure and urine checked through. It was quick.

I have growth scans also this time around. So maybe that is the case? It all just feels very rushed and my original midwife went off on maternity leave when I was 20 weeks and I've had 3 midwives since and now the one I'm actually having is off on annual leave so I'll see someone new on Thursday.

I adored my midwife with my daughter, I feel not as comfortable this time

Yeah I was told they won’t do measurements if you’re having growth scans. I think they’re pretty inaccurate anyway. My weight’s never been checked in any of my 4 pregnancies after working my bmi in my booking appointment.

IndividualApplicant · 14/05/2024 17:05

I'm glad they don't do measurements anymore. They were so inaccurate and actually caused me quite a lot of unnecessary worry when I was pregnant with my DS.

SarahLHs · 14/05/2024 17:06

Also had growth scans with my second and was told they don't do the measurements if that's the case as the scan is more accurate. If you weren't having scans they would be measuring.

Hey OP. My midwife appointments are the same as yours as this is my first baby but was told as I have growth scans they won’t measure my bump. I haven’t been weighed since my first and second appointment

FTMaz · 14/05/2024 17:07

Hi
they don’t do measurements if you’re having scans as scans are more accurate, I never once had my belly measured. I also didn’t have my weight done apart from at booking. I don’t think they do weight unless it was a concern at booking.

It's because you're having growth scans. They no longer measure if you have them- in my trust anyway

UpUpUpU · 14/05/2024 17:10

We don’t measure if you are having growth scans so don’t worry about that.

weight wise, I would weigh you at booking, 28 weeks and 36 weeks but not all trusts do this. Please ask if you’d like to be weighed or measured though.

DemelzaRobins · 14/05/2024 21:55

I've had growth scans and my bump measured by midwife. Scans said baby was big (was 94th centile, then 88th and now 72nd) but my bump measurements have been spot on.

I think a lot of trusts don't do bump measurements if you have growth scans.

I was weighed at booking appointment and at my scans but the obstetricians and midwives haven't been weighing me as standard.

However, I am being regularly weighed by Rheumatology and some of my other consultants as standard - so maybe the midwives don't see the need to weigh me as well. I just wish the other clinics would take the pregnancy into account instead of flagging my BMI is now in the overweight range!

OpposableThumbs2 · 14/05/2024 22:27

I was measuring small according to midwives so got sent for a growth scan. Consultant discharged me as according to them I was going to have a completely average sized baby. She was born in the 2nd centile. Consequently I'm not convinced the scans are more accurate.

As others have said they don't measure you if you have scans..I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and having another next week at 35 weeks because baby was on 12th centile so want to check she is growing ok. Midwife appointments are blood pressure and wee check then Doppler that's it, they last about 10 minutes but necessary for those checks I guess.
